    32,452 Swans members

    Swans post record membership numbers

    12:37 PM Tue 10 July, 2007
The Sydney Swans are delighted to announce a new record membership for the Club with 32,452 signing on for the 2007 season.

On top of the record for ?Full-Season? memberships the Swans also sold a further 8634 ?3-match Super Passes?, which take in the three Telstra Stadium blockbusters during the season.

Swans Chief Executive Myles Baron-Hay said; ?Obviously the overall membership numbers are tremendous with more than 22,000 members in Sydney and nearly 10,000 members in Melbourne.

?Adding the 3-match pass numbers to the bottom line we have more than 41,000 supporters financially committed to the Club for 2007.

?We?ve had 60,000-plus crowds at Telstra Stadium for the games against West Coast and Collingwood and all the games at the redeveloping SCG have been all-but sold out so the home game attendance figures are also extremely encouraging.?

Regarding the 3 match super pass, they were sold out along time ago, so there were a limit on it.

Say for the 3 games at TS (83k capacity).

    25k for members
    5k for away teams
    =30k

should not the swans have at least 20k of 3 match super pass?

    would = 50k

    Hence 30k for general sales.

Not wanting to start a Sydney fans vs. Melbourne fans argument (although I imagine it will kick one off because Melbourne fans are sooooooooo precious ), how do the other clubs feel about us counting the Melbourne members as a full member in our tally? I know that there is a fair bit of pride in the front office of the clubs as far as membership numbers, and I know (probably more so in the crowded Victorian market) that the numbers are used when courting potential sponsors. I imagine other clubs have similar memberships that are for folks based away from the clubs home town also, do they count them as full members in the tally? Do they have anywhere near the numbers that we have in Melbourne? A 10k increase with the Melbourne members is a fair push over the 22k Sydney members and makes our numbers look most respectable. Just curious if anyone has ever seen commentary/argument around that... have we always counted the Melbourne members as a full member in the tally?

I agree Stella. A Melbourne based member should only be .5 of a Sydney based member

Well that's my view in general, but in this case I'm just interested in how they be counted for the tally

Why would they not be counted?

Considering the population of Sydney 22000 Sydney members is not very many.

The 22K is capped by the size of the SCG.

I'm glad the 3-game stadium australia pass is increasing in numbers every year. Thats what I buy, since its a lot easier for me to get to. Never thought of myself as a member, but heh.

The swans should be aiming to get 20,000+ 3 game pass members. They are cheap as chips, and with some more marketting should be really popular.

Turn those people who go to only 1 game a year, to 3 games a year.

You are a Member if you have paid subscriptions to a Club, regardless of the category.
                    Thus they all count.

I'm not suggesting they shouldn't be counted, I'm just interested as to how they are counted towards a tally if that tally is in turn used for bragging rights/to win sponsors. I'm not suggesting that Melbourne members are any less passionate for the club than Sydney members, the same could be said for country members also (do they count towards that 22k Sydney total?).

All clubs are famous for fiddling their membership numbers. The Hawks were 'known' at one stage to have a significant number of canine members, around and after the time of their potential merger with Melbourne

I think we would have a few canine members too counted amongst that 32,000+. We even have other interstate membership categories now in Queesland, ACT, South Australia and Western Australia...all of which are counted in our total

So whatever the category - full, adult, children, dogs, Victorians etc they are all counted by all clubs

I would guess it makes sense if you are looking at the number of people interested in paying subs relative to how many games they can go to. For bragging rights the sponsors are interested in reach to the most people and regardless of how much they pay or how many games they attend, the spnnsor reach will be much the same.

I think what we might also be looking at is a rather pathetic man (me) who is currently on holidays, has been left alone to his own devices this morning and the best thing he can do with his time is look for new calculation models.
