I just expect Paul Bevan to make those kind of mistakes. I actually thought he was better tonight than he normally was. His fumbles at crucial times were not as frequent as they normally were.

I swear I still thing is is only in the team because of his hardness and tackling ability. Because other than that there are more than definitely other players in the reserves who have better skills and decision-making attributes as he does.

Personally I'd de-list Bevan along with Vogels & Doyle at the end of the season. They are presently a liability and are little more than dead wood in the squad at the moment. The embarrassing thing is that Bevan still manages to get a game each week this season.

exactly. the only reason bevan is in the team is because he attacks the ball very hard - yet that doesnt make up for his lack of skill and decision making. i will be seriously worried if he isnt dropped this week.

both vogels and doyle are liabilities. grundy is also on the borderline. they just cant hack it in the afl. maybe they just need more game time - but it was obvious from the start of last night's game that having to rely on vogels and grundy was not going to help us win.

ps. i recently came to the realisation that there is one good thing about bevan being in the side: the amusement at the injuries he causes. he just throws himself at the contest and usually its members from the opposing teams who get hurt. eg the saints game - bevan takes out two at once in a marking contest. one was robert harvey but i cant think of the other. but anyway this doesnt make up for his general pathetic attempts at marking, kicking, playing football etc.

Attack on the ball is a good thing and probably hard to teach. I know if some told me to charge into a pack of players some much bigger as in Bevans case I'd probably think twice. But I am 6'5 so I would anyway!!

But once you get the ball, you have to be able to do something with and Bevan doesnt or cant. Just makes crap choices in disposal and the handball to Dempster is a classic example.

Gotta go. Surely there's is someone in the 2's can get the ball then at least do something with it.

It makes me sick that he's in the side over guys like Laidlaw, Moore and Buchanan.

No doubt Buchanan will be back next week...probably LRT too.

2 crucial dropped marks in the final term, under little pressure.

You just described Brett Kirk, and we all love him... That's why Bevo's in the side, because there is something about this club that values a player like this more highly than a highly skilled player.

because they are NSW-born players, skill doesnt matter. The Sydney public accepts that being from NSW means you get a little bit of leeway. You can try to mark the ball with your head every week and be forgiven.

                    That's crap.

I don't know why they keep getting picked but being from NSW has nothing to do with it... They dropped Davis like a stone when he's clearly one of our most highly skilled players....

That's why he was dropped - too skilled for a NSW player and actually was able to mark with his hands, not head.

Bevan is on the list because he's a Sydney boy. As I said in another thread, he wouldn't get a game at 15 other clubs - Carlton included.

At least when Brisbane drafted in Qld lads they could call on all time greats of the game - Voss, Aker etc. Somehow I don't think Bevan fits the bill.

Maybe he doesn't deserve his spot and maybe he shouldn't be picked. But he's not in the team soley because he's from NSW....

Hence our generally disappointing approach to the contested ball - all dive in and force a ball up.

Well there's definitely something fishy going on with his selection.

At least use the comment in context. Said he was very courageous but sometimes "reckless" in his attack on the ball. The comment while critical was also complementary.

Contested pressuring football actually won us a premiership so we should probably now revert to a game plan that is obsolete by about 15 years.
