McVeigh got a bit of the ball but his disposal is still ordinary - there was one good pass forward. Cuz had 38 disposals on 3 opponents (majority on McVeigh) after 4 months out, so Im not sure if Mc broke even.

Im not a fan but this was probably one of his better games for the year. Saying that I would prefer Mc to Jude and would prefer to see him at HF for a longer time in his mid Field rotations.

For all the hype going on here (will not be surprised if The West Australian runs a Cousins to win Brownlow story) he did have 7 clangers.
Sure he had a mountain of possession but quality possession I think not.

He may have had 7 clangers, but that was out of 38 possessions, so that still leaves plenty of decent possession. He also had 5 clearances and 5 tackles.

The thing I found annoying is the Swans let him have an easy return - they should have had a player right on him as soon as he stepped on the field, pushing him and niggling him, rather than make it easy for him.

Yes - it should have been someone like Goodes as well to try and run him off his feet early. We allowed him too many easy possessions so he got his feel and confidence back very early on and destroyed us from there.

Have only just got on here due to Harry Potter hangover...and triying to play hockey with dead brain and legs. Was going to start a thread on how it was it was McVeigh best game he has played for us but obviously beaten to it.....a bit like my game today.


He was very good last night. Some good attacking clearances and seemed to step up maturity wise. Agree..he overtook Jude last night(Jude not Judd). I felt a bit confident with Jar(r)e(y)d(d) shooting for goal but when Jude had his set shot I just tried to read another couple of HP paragraphs.

Yeah - totally agree RE Cousins NMW. We should have had someone in his ear from the word go. I would have been in there talking all sorts of crap trying to get a rise out of him. The bloke is a druggo...I can't believe there was more hype surrounding him than Adam Ramanauskas. This bloke has chosen his path to go down, Rama had little to no say in the matter....

He didnt make too many mistakes from what I saw tonight. Most of his possessions were positive - the full-paced, one-handed pickup and 40m drilling pass to Leo on the lead comes to mind, and also his tackle on Glass (or was it Hurn) early in the game.

Also very effective coming out as a receiver from the centre. And yes, comparisons to B1 are warranted- he's slow, cannot find the pill against good sides, and has an appalling kick (somehthing like 2.7 at set shots this year).

I dont know what to make on a 12 point defeat in a game where we were smashed 80% of the time.

I know what to make of it. As usual the hard stuff and hard running was left to too few. The same ones kept us in it and the others kept us out of it. Too many unaccountable players who struggle to have more than 1 good game in a row.

A damning stat from last night - Clearances Kirk 9, McVeigh 8, Davis 4, Goodes 3, Fosdike 2, Ablett 1 and J Bolton NIL. Fosdike is an outside midfileder and puts in every week, but apart from that it is fairly obvious who was doing all the hard stuff.

Perhaps we need to get a little bit of mongrel into us.

I mean we are "hard at the ball" and all and a fair team...but I reckon if we had tried to rough the junkie up it would have had an affect.

Happy to admit that it was probably McVeigh's best game for us. Was often in the right position, and made some very positive and clean clearances. Some of his disposal was questionable, but he always presented.

How long did it take Mark McVeigh to really establish himself? I remember his early years weren't particularly great either, but these days he's one of Essendon's top players. They have a similar body shape, but obviously Mark has had a few extra years to put on extra muscle. Maybe Jarrad needs to take lessons from his brother to add a bit of anger and mongrel to his game?

We can only hope this most recent game is the Jarrad we're likely to see in the years to come.

i think mcveigh's been quite good the last few weeks, although his bad games earlier in the season still seem to overshadow this for many supporters

every time he gets the ball, there's a collective groan where in my bay at the SCG... i feel like i'm the only one supporting him (well, half supporting him). everytime i cheer for him and give him a bit of encouragement, i'm greeted by either death stares or "you've got to be kidding me" giggles and smirks

nevertheless, i still maintain that he has potential and he'll get there... he's got the fitness and his skills and footy smarts are decent (although not apparent in some games)

McVeigh was actually OK playing on Cuz.

The problem started when Ablett and Bevan started playing on him - That's when the massacre begun.

He still lacks hardness though, which is why he shouldn't play on the ball. He's most dangerous in a forward pocket or on a half forward flank.

He has not got the body strength to play as an onballer. Especially in a club with a game based around stoppages like ours. He is a receiver/runner type. Needs the ball to be won for him by the likes of Kirk & Bolton.

I thought he enjoyed the room to move at Subi last night. A spot on the wing or half forward looks the best spot for him I feel.

You wonder whether Roos is playing him in a position he is not really suited to.
