Maybe he told them to stick it and he'll walk now.
The other sackings and the lack of contenders for all the open positions may have forced their hand - Dons would be a far more attractive prospect than Freo, Roos or Dees.

And after it looked like they were all Lovey-Dovey after the board meeting the other night.... A bit of a surprise I would have thought....

One things for sure, he'll have to go now. Can you imagine if they left him there and he coached them into the finals and then deep into September??? Look like a total bunch of tools then!!

I was watching the ABC programme Offsiders on Sunday morning and Caroline Wilson was very certain that Sheedy would be going back to Richmond. Maybe not as coach, but "definitely going back" apparentley....

An absolute legend of AFL footy... probably only second to Barrassi... and a real champion of the code's expansion, indigenous footy, and basic common sense. I've always liked his style.

If I were in charge of Freo I'd be on the phone this afternoon asking when he can start.

Essendon's last game this year will be emotitional with it being Sheedy's and Hird's last game.

I think at least one assistant will get promoted..... So that leaves at least one senior coach on the outer....

The $64k question is, which one?

Wow. I Wouldn't be surprised if Richmond sack Wallace and hire Sheedy next year.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

And get another contract payout?????? Gee, how lucky is that guy!!

FWIW, the EFC have decided not to renew Sheedy's contract. That's a bit different to being "sacked". I saw the press conference and it was a dignified, if not, humorous announcement.

The media reporting of this event is bizarre to say the least. It shows great disrespect to one the most respected identities in football.

Yep - 100% agree. Well said.

It's the end of an era without a shadow of a doubt.
Whatever we've ever said about Kevin Sheedy, the bloke is one of the all time greats and should be acknowledged as such.
It's going to be strange reading the papers etc next year and have it say Essendon coach anybody but Sheeds.
While I reckon Pagan is finished, if Sheedy wants another job, Sheedy will probably get another job.

Watch the Bombers for the rest of this year, they'll be pumped up for six weeks at least.
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

I think he probably deserved better from the club.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I'm still in shock. I never thought this game will arrive.
Sheedy has seen Essendon through some enormous changes in the game. When he began, he was the sole coach and had another job; now they have a panel of full-time coaches. When he began there were 12 clubs, all based in Victoria; and games were played on suburban grounds.
The one constant in football, Sheedy coaching Essendon, has gone. Generations who have never known football without Sheeds in the Bomber coaching box will be faced with the unfamiliar sight of someone else in that job. Football won't be the same.

Sheedy was an innovator and a visionary; and one of the greatest coaches ever in the history of the game. He will be sadly missed.

an absolute legend, a champion of the game , i had a feeling this was going to happen , and i only hope he went on his terms and wasnt pushed. end of a era in footy , sheedy to leave the afl stage with his champion hird. they both deserve massive send offs.

I'm sure they'll get it, to the sounds of "Go SGIO Eagles SGIO Eagles" as they wave goodbye to their fans.

Real pity the Bombers last game is in Perth. Those effwits don't deserve to witness the closing of an era.
