I'm assuming that its because we have so many more stoppages than any other team, therefore, giving our midfield more chances than other teams to actually get a clearance. Same with hitouts.

I'll bite.
Commentators suggest that becuase we are very good (actaully the best) at making sure that our opposition don't get their hands on the ball first or use it to their advantage. So while it can be ugly by us and not always very effective the game plan resolves more around crontrolling what the other team can do with the football.
