    Longmire slips in coaching stakes

    Story here

Wouldn't surprise me if the Swans have worked out a succession plan with Roos and Longmire. Similiar to what most in the know believed happened with Craig at Adelaide.

Time will tell. I hope the Swans haven't though because who knows what will happen, or who will be available, in 3 years time.

I'm unconvinced Longmire is an obvious successor anyhow given he missed out on the St Kilda job - clearly wasn't impressive enough - and isn't even in the frame for the four jobs now available.

I wouldnt regard the St Kilda selection process as being "best of breed". Its only one step above the Richmond process.

Longmire has struggled with the change of role to midfield coach. A tough gig at the swans, but if we kick on this year or next, could make him a very well rounded coach.

I think there probably is a succession plan involved. I'm not sure what Longmire's situation is, but he may like living in Sydney, his kids might be in school, so being an assistant coach for another 3 years, then senior coach after that would provide him with a nice stable career path, without the hassle and uncertainty of moving.

At the end of the day, its your life John. Sydney is a good club to coach at. Low media scutiny, and a culture that does not allow rebuilding by bottoming out. The board/management/AFL will actively support big player acquisitions to avoid it. Money is not an issue.

I think it is unfair to say he wasn't impressive in that process. It was pretty clear that once Walls asked Lyon to apply, that he was the front runner. I can't say that Longmire didn't stuff up of course, but Walls certainly wanted Lyon to be the coach.

Roos has already been in the press saying that he would entertain the idea of working with a different head coach when he finishes his contract.

Would hardly surprise if that had been discussed with Longmire. If he is a known quantity, and a frontrunner for jobs at other clubs, I dont see an issue there.

That and the fact that their chosen "expert" was Robert Walls.....

G'day. New here. Long time reader. First time poster.

I'd say its a done deal that Longmire is the next coach of the Swans. Roos has hinted more than once that when his time is up at Sydney then thats him done. Longmire knows this and would be a fool to look elsewhere. He knows the list, knows the Club and knows the future objectives.
