Free kick difference

I've known for quite some time that we usually get the raw end of the deal when it comes to umpiring.
I just wasn't aware that it was this bad....

Below is a list of the free kick difference for each team from 2005 to round 18 2007

West Coast +207
Kangaroos +167
Carlton +110
St.Kilda +93
Collingwood +87
Richmond +48
Essendon +40
Brisbane +27
Geelong -8
Melbourne -8
Western Bulldogs -18
Port Adelaide -57
Adelaide -97
Fremantle -111

I'm not suggesting that free kicks shoud be even, but that's a massive discrepancy and a worrying trend over almost 3 years.
You would think that things would even themselves out somewhat over that sort of time.

I have absolutely no doubt that nearly all the afl umopires are biased against Sydney...presumably this is sub-conscious, but the bias is pretty obvious...other teams get frees paid that we don't, and have done for several years. On top of this there are a similarly disproportionate number (IMHO) of straight out errors...ie about 3 to 1 against us. It is unbelievably rare for the Swans to receive a completely erroneous free kick.

If West Coast receive 15 free kicks in a game and give away 15, then they are at 0. the +207 means that between 2005-2007, they've received 207 more free kicks than they've given away, while we've given away 240 more than we've received. At least that's how I understand it.

Given that we've played them in the last 2 grand finals, that is an absolutely amazing stat.

The numbers don't add up to 0, which should be the case.

It works out to 3.4 free kicks per game for the Swans.

So FF 17.3, FA 20.7

For West Coast it is:

FF 19.0, FA 16.0

We give away more free kicks than any other team.

Worst offenders are Hall, Jolly, Goodes and Barry.

Gees Scott where have you been? As the AFLs love child it doesn't matter how many FF or FA we get - we will always be given a red carpet ride into the grand final.

While i do think we get a raw deal with free kicks some players are justified in getting penalized. Barry Hall gives away some stupid free kicks and he knows it.

Don't think thats the argument, the point is, he doesn't get the ones back that he deserves often enough.

To be honest.... He's rarely receiving frees because he's rarely the victim of sloppy/poor play. He just manages to dish it out in spades.

It is a staggering stat. If ball winners are rewarded how come Goodsey, a dead set ball player, is fifth (last time I checked) in FA'S. The umps have become the style police and are umpiring to an AFL policy to favour a certain style of footy. Anderson said as much recently.
