    Barlow Elevated

    Source

A spot on the senior list became available earlier this week when Stephen Doyle and Daniel Currie moved onto the long-term injury list, with knee and groin injuries respectively.
    Well Done.

I thought Liz said it was to late in the season for that to happen. Maybe they have changed the rules on that as well, they seem to have changed every other rule that they can in the last few years.

As I said in the injury thread, there was not much point putting blokes on the LTI list unless rookie elevations were possible. I reckon these LTI's are fabrications that have been invented to ensure that well performed reserves players (who this year happen to be rookies) are available for selection if the senior list is suddenly stricken with injury. Good luck to the Cheese, if he does happen to get a gig and has a shot inside fifty, mark a goal down in your record. He is a terrific set shot for goal.

When you watch the ressies, in the first two quarters the ground is so empty that you can hear all the players calling to each other, and pick up their nicknames pretty quickly. Barlow has been called "Cheese" from day one - he comes from Bega.

Hey, all I did was read the AFL's rules. That doesn't mean I know anything.

But for anyone interested, clause 12.2 c) of the AFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement 2003-2008 states

"An AFL Club is unable to transfer an injured Player to or from its Long
Term Injury List after round 18 of the AFL Premiership Season in each year."

Re-reading this, it doesn't say that you can't promote a rookie to fill a vacant spot that has arisen due to a player on the LTIL, just that you can't create a new vacancy after round 18.

Maybe one or both of these players was actually put on the LTIL before round 18, even though they were announced now. Or maybe the speculation that Jack had been promoted to fill the vacancy arising when Columbo was placed on the list was incorrect, and that is what Barlow has filled. Or maybe the placing of these two players on the LTIL has provided enough salary cap room to enable the club to take advantage of the two nominated rookies they are allowed since they have no veterans.

Or maybe, as GS14 has suggested, the AFL just changes the rules as they please.

Regardless of how Barlow has got there, I am really excited to see if he gets a game or not. There are several of the rookies who I think may have what it takes, but Barlow has the potential to be something quite special. He also has the potential to crash and burn in a hurry. It will be fascinating to see whether he can adapt from the pace of the ACTAFL to the AFL and keep the ratio between the great stuff he does and the bloopers he commits 5 minutes later within an acceptable ratio.

For those who've not seen him, he has very similar physical attributes to Dempster but probably attacks a game more than Dempster (based on an ACTAFL level comparison). As a KPP prospect he's still pretty green and gets caught out of position quite often but looks more likely to develop into a KPP than Dempster does. He's probably as athletic as Dempster but maybe not quite as quick. He doesn't hoof the ball a country mile as Dempster does but can easily make the distance kicking for goal from 50m or so and is a pretty accurate kick from a set shot.

His main weakness is possibly that he frequently forgets one of Denis Commetti's favourite maxims - "a mans gotta know his limitations".

Cheese is a big boy, at least 6' 4" and is filling out very nicely.

Liz, I wouldn't worry about being perplexed re: the 'RD 18' rule, it was also my firm belief that it was the case, based on the minimum time a player must be placed on the list is 8 weeks, therefore 4 rounds from the end of the H&A + 4 finals.

I strongly suspect these players were put on the LTI list last week but as nobody was elevated it wasn't publicised. By that reckoning, they still have the option of promoting another rookie if they deem it necessary.

My crew constantly get Cheese and Vogels mixed up.

Very similar in looks and build for those who haven't seen him and as ORB said, very, very good shot at goal.

So, has anyone played 'The Last Post' on Stephen Doyle's AFL career yet?

PS 'Long-term injury list' my foot. I think you'll find that not long ago Doyle's injury was marked '1-2 weeks'. It conveniently got a lot worse just in time for the LTIL deadline. And the other LTIL guy is a first-year ruckman who doesn't even live in NSW. Geepers, how lucky is that, that player #38 out of 38 senior list players in line for selection, should be the one that goes down? And just before deadline, too?

Sssshh, someone at the afl might hear you.

Actually, if this site is accurate, then I stand corrected. It says that the onset of the Replacement Currie's injury was Round 19 (no doubt playing against kids in Victoria); which means that either the club's talkin' nonsense when it says he's on the official LTIL, or they've changed the rules.

However, equally oddly (and rather concerningly, for my money), the injuryupdate site says that Colombo Faulks is out for the season with the dreaded OP. No mention of him being injured at all on the official list. Anyone know the true story?

As much as I love the Donk, I think this spells the end for the big fella. At 26, he's been on the list for 8 or so years for only 47 games. He obviously has some talent and has shown some of that when finally hitting the paddock every now and then. Not even trade bait.
