Well it was a bit high, and I think Jolly wasn't expecting Goodes to play on that quickly. I don't think that really cost us, there was still a lot of time to go. The one that irritated me was that we didn't drop another man back to block Brown's space and he snaffled that mark pretty much uncontested.Comment

While taking the dog for a walk it occured to me that we didn't go down the guts a heck of a lot. They seemed to force us wide a lot but when they went forward they seemed to be far more central.
Thought of one play that really had a bearing on the result. It was almost the first play of the last Q when someone short passed along the ground to Barlow when probably a long kick to an open forward line was a better option. The result was a turnover for a goal. If we got the first one it was game over.Comment

Using him as a scapegoat is total horse@@@@. You guys need to try harder.
I know. It was one bad mistake. but ffs everyone here is lambasting him from pillar to post. He had an ok game. Certainly wasn't the only reason why we lost
If you're gonna blame people, which I wouldn't do because it achieves @@@@ all, you'd have a crack at Hall for missing set shots.Last edited by Mogg0; 18 August 2007, 11:40 PM.Grandson of South Melbourne legend Keith Schaefer.Comment

Exactly. I was at the game and Bevan smashed Brennan. All night.

Yeah, not even close. Bevan was actually very reliable tonight, and I felt comfortable whenever he had the ball. He offered up some great options, especially in the last 3 minutes. Sure, it was a bad @@@@ up, but labeling that as the main reason we lost, and overlooking the multitude of other reason's typifies the pessimistic idiots on this board.

Threw it away and wasted our good percentage.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

The result was crap - as good as a loss. And what makes it worse is that it was a lost draw, not a won draw, if that makes any sense. On balance of play we deserved to just sneak it.
But putting aside the disappointment, I'm a little bewildered by some of the reaction. I saw it as a tense, tight game with both teams playing pretty well under intense pressure. Sure, some players didn't have great games but that's not unusual.
Especially bewildered about the hostility towards Bevan. He made a couple of bloopers but on the whole did a pretty good job on a mercurial guy 3 inches taller than he is.
The killer moment for me was Schneider's last miss when he played on after taking a mark (with a nod to Barlow for finding him with a smart kick). I know there was plenty of time left before the end of the game so it wasn't the losing play but it was a bit of a brain fade from him.
There were a few positives from the game. I suspect lots of inches will be written about young Cheese in the coming days. Hopefully that will be weeks. Or years.
But another was a return to marking form from Bazza. I realise he let himself down with his kicking for goal but it was great to see him taking some very strong contested marks on a very accomplished spoiler in Merrett. He's not been taking those in recent weeks.
I also thought Jude played one of his best games for the year. Say what we like about him, he does get his head down over the ball and he won some important clearances from doing that today.Comment

absolutely they tried to hold on too early. just one ablett/malceski/cbolt/goodes shot from outside 50 for a point and the game was ours.
dammit. need hawks and geelong to win tomorrow and then the only win against the odds we need is the doggies to beat the roos in the last round. not out of the question but we're going to need a lot of things to go our way to make the grand final this year. first, we need to find that 20% that has been missing all year. without it we won't even get over the hawks in two weeks.then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i knowComment

Totally agree! Tonight he was nothing short of terrible. His disposal by both foot and hand was average - most of them were hospital passes to players already under pressure. He was also found out alot in defence tonight too.And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

Yep, at this stage of the year the difference between this and a loss is nil apart from the wonderful 'prestige'. Unless one of our fellow top-4 competitors has a draw and a loss in their remaining games. Here's hoping. Because if they don't, last night was probably the night where we farewelled the dream for year 2007.Comment

Have woken up feeling ok...which is good for someone with my condition. Have read the last few pages and seen the positives from posters.
We didn't lose.
Barlow played really, really well for a first gamer. We have been crying out for new blood and it showed the coaching in the twos is preparing kids for the big time despite the big wins.
Black.Power.Lappin didn't dominate as they have previously. We did a good job without Leo to keep Brown from tearing us apart.
We are still a good team.
We were playing away which still makes a big difference.
We made some mistakes but that is humanity.
I am one of the best for using this board for venting my spleen but today I feel calm about us.

Well after watching the Swans doing all they could to lose the game, I suppose should be greatful for two points.
Not a case of Brisbane playing good football, they were just waiting to capitalise on the Sydney mistakes.
Trying to find some high points from the night, the defence work of C Bolts was outstanding yet again, and a solid game from Ted Richards plus a good performance on debut by Barlow.
Downsides I could be here for hours, but why the damn negative football!!!! Yes Sydney had players out injured, but then again so did Bris.
Goal kicking the less said the better, just hope the forwards coach isn't getting paid by the goal or he could be coming to a intersection near you to wash your windscreen to get some money.
Simply put on that form if Sydney did make the finals they would just be making up the numbers.Premiers 09,18,33,05

Huge tactical error by the Swans
The Swans made a huge tactical error last night by trying to lock down the game when up by one goal. With any other scoreline ( such as up by 1, 2 or 7 points) it would have made sense to lock down the game. But being up by exactly one goal we should have gone on the attack. We only needed a behind to just about seal the game, and Brisbane needed a goal. Given that we were playing at least as well as them at that point, we should have exploited this arithmetic advantage.
We should have implemented a strategy to get one point. We could have sent both ruckmen forward and tried to put ourselves in a position to get the ball in the hands of a long kicker anywhere inside 70 and just sent the ball toward the goal. We would have been almost certain to get the ball at least rushed behind. Game over.
What we did instead was devalue Kirk's goal and played as if we were only a point up, not six. A draw was nearly as bad as a loss for us. We needed to go for the win. Very poor mental error made by the leadership group. The thing that probably cost us the game.Comment
