An observation about the Gabba and Lions supporters

I experienced my first ever game at the Gabba last night and I love the ground. The SCG Trust should take note. I was also amazed by the number of Swans supporters there. Where I sat was about 1/3 Swans, 2/3 Lions and the friendly banter, goodwill and sportsmanship in the crowd between both groups of supporters was excellent. Brisbane supporters now rank as my favourites (apart from Sydney of course). Rather than having any (artificially created) rivalry, I think Sydney and Brisbane have much in common. I'll be back there everytime we play there.

This year was the first year since 02 I hadn't been up to the Gabba and I can only agree with you entirely cruiser. Not only are the fans up there really great to watch a game with, but the staff are way more friendly and helpful than any at either of the 2 grounds in Sydney.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Got to agree on everything. It was my first time to the Gabba for footy and I couldn't agree more about how terrific the ground is, wonderful vision for the entire ground. The Lions supporters were great sports, the venue staff, police on duty and transport staff were all wonderfully helpful. It was an all round excellent evening (barring the result).

It used to make me laugh when we played the Lions in Rivalry Round. We have solidarity against the Victorians who kicked us out of Melb and watching our clubs wither away while the others sat in their ivory towers. We both have to battle in League/Rugger/netball territory and the other states just have no idea what that is like.

I loved Fitzroy and I love the Lions. (HateSurfers Paradise but. Artificiality isn't my strong suit)

Another reason to hate the Kangaroos.

            Totally agree.

My first time to the Gabba and the crowd was brilliant. They know their footy and make 100 times more nosie then the Sydney social set.

Funny you say that. I was chatting with one of the young fellas you see who sit to the left of screen (ie the bay to the right of the away cheer squad each week). He was telling me that he was really disillusioned with the fact that the away fans outcheer that area of the ground every week. And that even the Lions Cheer Squad didn't get up and get chants going like we were doing on Saturday night. I basically aid "Welcome to my world mate"

The thing I liked about the Lions fans was that when me or Pete got one of the chants going, rather than get abusive towards us (like Crows & Eagles fans do) our chants actually stirred them up into chanting for their team. It wasn't nasty or vindictive.

I have Port-supporting friends who won't go to Brisbane again because they reckon it is feral. I never have a problem there at games to be honest. There is this unwritten bond between Lions & Swans fans, even if we don't really acknowledge it openly.

Ha ha ha. Pot, kettle, black. Actually, Port supporters are far far more feral than Lions supporters.

I agree, it is really stupid when people get silly and hate each other over a game of footy.

                    Gabba v SCG

I even heard that the 50 metre line at the Gabba really is 50 metres!

Not like the 42.7m at the SCG.

Gotta go..... off to the artificial Gold Coast. Love the place.

                        I share your sentiments cruiser.

The game in Round 20 was my first too and I too, will be returning to the Gabba.

I believe its a fantastic venue to watch footy.

The facilities are fantastic and its quite a comfortable ground.
Well done Craig Bolton for getting the co- captaincy in 2008.

Your determination, your tenacity and your under-rated skill is why you have become my favourite player!

It wasn't a matter of life or death. More the result of Aylett trying to boost the stocks of his mates at Ch 7. Its happened so we live with it. But gee revenge is best served cold. Go the Surfing Kangaroo

I went up to the the GABBA for the first time this year. Great ground to watch the game. I got a couple of compliments from Lions supporters nearby regarding my passionate support for the Swans. Onething that I found a little strange was that the locals didn't really seem to really get behind the Lions until the final qtr. My only other minor gripe was that the Shuttle bus (caught from Roma St Station) dropped us off at the wrong end of the ground as far as the away CS area is concerned. Apart from that, the result, and a problem I had with the airline and my flag(I arrived at my hotel at 10.00pm Fri night, my flag did not arrive until 1.00pm Sat afternoon ) I had a good tiime.
