If I had any confidence in the testing system I'd be all for naming and shaming but when a player could potentially go a year high as a kite without being tested it seems harsh to name a player who had the misfortune of actually being tested.

Because they're illegal.
Because they're supposed to be community "role models".
Because they're performance enhancing (well, perhaps not so much cannibis).
Because it's not fair to all the other players who are not taking recreational drugs.
Why bother having a three-strike policy at all?
It basically says, by definition of having three chances, that it's sort-of ok to take recreational drugs.
If the AFL were serious about recreational drugs, there would be naming and shaming and player sackings.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

That's why they should all pop in a test after each game. If you're gunna do it, make it fair to all.
They test horses for drugs don't they after each race??Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Do you think you should be publicly 'named and shamed' by your employer if you do something illegal.
Firstly, there is no reason why they are. Secondly, does it help if players are named as having drug problems?Because they're supposed to be community "role models".
They're not all performance enhancing.Because they're performance enhancing (well, perhaps not so much cannibis).
'Not fair' in what way? Only relevant if performance enhancing.Because it's not fair to all the other players who are not taking recreational drugs.
The policy does not require public 'naming and shaming'. That's simply about trash media. Why bother having a three-strike policy at all?
It says nothing of the sort.It basically says, by definition of having three chances, that it's sort-of ok to take recreational drugs.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Geez, it really, really, really helped Ben Cousins.NMW Bloods ... Firstly, there is no reason why they are. in response to your not seeing why recreational drug users should be named and shamed.Because they're supposed to be community "role models".
You said ...
I said ....
Ben gots lots and lots of help didn't he? He got sent to a fancy rehab centre in the USA for four weeks, he trained for six months straight and got all cut up noice, came back to an adoring crowd of ferals and had an all-time highest possession game, and life just went back to sunny normal as if nothing ever happened.Geez, it really, really, really helped Ben Cousins.
Maybe all the players who take recreational drugs should put their hands up and see if they get the same treatment benny boy did.
As for no reason why they should be role models - we all know there is no reason for it, yet the greater majority of Australian society still insists on putting sportspeople on higher pedestals than say, the doctors who discovered a vaccine for cervical cancer.
Tomorrow morning there'll be two major stories on the front of NSW papers ... Joey Johns pops eccy and the gee gees got the flu.
Surely there are more important things.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Because it's news. Because even when footballers go out and get pissed and make an ass of themselves, it gets reported. Because if they drink drive, they get named and shamed. Because when they drive like hoons, they get named and shamed. Because when they go out on the town with a bikie gang and shoot up a warehouse, they get named and shamed. Because when they invlove themselves in brawls in pubs they get named and shamed. Becasue when they grab a woman's breast they get named and shamed. Because when there is unacceptable social behaviour such as taking illegal drugs, they get named and shamed.Comment
