    Robert Teal

I'm hoping there's some people who followed the Swans in the late 80s and have excellent memories, or at least someone who fancies themselves as a historian of the club.

Robert Teal was picked up by Sydney through the pre-season draft in 1989. On debut, at the age of 22, he had 21 possessions, three goals. His second game saw another two goals from 14 touches. 19 possessions in his third game, 18 in his fourth, just 5 in his fifth and back up to 18 in his sixth, and so on.

Now, statistically, he had one of the best debut seasons from any Sydney player I've recorded (and I have stats going back to 1989). Furthermore, this was at a time of huge transition at the club, and one would have thought a talented young player would be valuable.

Instead, he played just one game in 1990, and never played again!

Unfortunately, I can't remember what on earth happened. Was he like an earlier version of Bomford, getting plenty of the ball but doing little with it? DId injuries cut him down? Or was it something else altogether?

Wow that is an obscure one. I think a back injury finished his very promising career.

If I recall correctly we recruited him from Hawthorn, I guess he couldn't get a game back when they were a powerhouse.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a dodgy back that stopped him in his tracks.

Well done everyone. That was a bit before my "I'm obsessed with the swans" time. I was only 7 years old. No excuse I know!

I went to Uni and worked my first job with Rob Teal until he went to Sydney. My recollections are slightly vague but I seem to recall that he was an outstanding junior player but a bit hit and miss in the seniors.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a similar ending to his career as Paul Bryce a few years later.

We also lost Jamie Lawson at a very young age around the same time, as if we didn't have enough problems in the early 90s...
