    Thanks Cow. That's very handy.
It'll be interesting to compare it to the final TLM count.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

According to the Swans website, Goodes almost won his third Brownlow last night

ADAM Goodes came within a whisker of claiming his third Brownlow Medal, but in the end it was a Cat whose whiskers found the cream, with Jimmy Bartel claiming the 2007 medal.

Nine points is a lot in the Brownlow, isn't it?

I think it's more a case of don't let the fact that he was ineligible ruin a good story.

            Absolutely.
If only he didn't hit what's-his-name and became ineligible.
If only he picked up his game a month before he did.
            If onlys.

As I posted somewhere last night, how Craig Bolton managed to obtain no votes from the StKilda game at Homebush is just astonishing, truly astounding.

It's the umpires who decide these things isn't it???

                If yes, there's your answer.

We don't have enough players on the protected list.

The one that surprised me was Jude Bolton getting the token Swans vote in the loss to Adelaide when ROK was by some margin the only Swan really worthy of any recognition. His name even came up in BOG considerations (for the C10 TV) before it went to McLeod.

It is best and fairest.... Not only best.

I'd suggest that for whatever reason, that the umpires, on occassion, may deem a player to not be the "fairest" on the day. Explaining why there are sometimes, inexplicable differences between the votes given and what the TV commentators think.

Thanks for the comparison Scott. Shows some strange perceptions and (un)intentional biases by the umpires I think.

It certainly seems as if umpires watch different games to us. And admittedly they are watching from a different vantage point.

Kirk is an odd one. You'd expect him to get more kudos from us than from the umpires for most of his games, since they're low on the flash factor. I guess some games it doesn't surprise me he got the recognition (like the first Hawks game where he was in everything in the second half). But I see he also got 2 votes in the Bulldogs game, which was one of his own lower possession games but one in which he kept Scott West almost invisible. Does this suggest that umpires go into Dogs games with the expectation of giving votes to West and then look for a reason why he's not been prominent? Certainly it's unusual for defensive roles to get Brownlow votes.

When Pearce got 2 votes in the game against us the camera flashed to him and he himself looked bewildered. He did almost nothing that afternoon (I think he was coming back from illness) except for about 4 touches in one brilliant piece of play early in the final quarter when the Power put on that mini-surge. His total disposals for the afternoon amounted to just 11! Ebert, on the other hand, was very good that afternoon - by far the best Port player.

And I think BOG to Brown in the second Lions game was probably mostly due to his drawing kick. I thought he and CB had broken even up to then, and Brown was pretty wasteful with the few chances Bolts did let him have. But all is forgiven in one moment of heroics.

I think in Kirk's case there is probably also a nice guy factor at play. He's usually the last to emerge from packs, there's probably a bit of good natured chatter going on with the umpires, and what would be noticeable too is his words of encouragement to teammates. Unlike Barry Hall, for example, who abuses umpires and teammates.

I would expect the umpires aren't always blinded by flashy play either and do acknowledge the defensive aspects of the game. Kirk laid the most tackles in the AFL this season and given the umpires have to adjudicate on most of those, it's not surprising he's in the umpire's voting calculations after the game.
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
