?For us I think we need to try and get an outside skillful running midfielder?we lost Paul Williams a couple of years ago and I think it?s a Paul Williams type of player that we miss.
First real hint that we are in store for some fresh faces in the side come Round 1 next year.
Also very happy they are looking for a classy type of midfielder.
He has obviously taken heed of the members survey
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
So he says that "the current playing group deserve another shot" and "we'll see how we go at the end of the year"
And yet......
We're going to "freshen up the list" by trading for a TJ type (2nd round pick older player as a top up).......so which one of the players who deserve another chance will get shafted there?????
And also......
"I think we need to get some new faces into the team in round one, two and three next year and maybe make a few changes in the off season if we can."
So who gets shafted out of the players who "deserve another chance."
The only way it's possible to reconcile these two stements is if the first few rounds will be a non-merit based "select and see" series of trial games, where 10 or 12 players get randomly rotated in for a game or two to see who has the most impact and who is past it.
I'm sure our early opponents will be thrilled to see that we won't have settled on a team before round four!!!
On the other hand, the optimist in me says that what will happen is an HONEST appraisal of the WHOLE list during the pre-season and that the players with the best CURRENT FORM will actually get selected.
The make-up of our midfield beyond Kirk, Malceski and Goodes should be entirely up for grabs.
"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005
It's not going to happen. It's Roos, we're talking about. Expect the same next year. He's just hoping that the senior players will get their heads off their non-footy activities (like setting up their own businesses) back to what are they suppose to do and that is playing footy.

Roos says basically the same thing every year so don't get too excited.

Pertinent point.
Bolton had possibly his worst season in his 9 seasons at the club, Monty was well down on 05/06 form. A week after the GF they launch a business venture which would have kept their minds well and truly occupied (and probably a bit stressed) during the year.
I have no doubt Goodes' early poor form and out of character acts of madness can be attributed to his relationship problems.
You can't lock them in rooms with footy videos 24/7, but somehow they must be made to realise that footy doesn't last forever for them, they should give 100% committment while they have the chance. You're a long time retired.
Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09

On the other hand, they've got to do something (constructive) in their "off-time" AND prepare for their long-time retirement from footy ... 35 is one foot in the grave in footy terms. Most these guys don't go past 30. That's a lot of years ahead of them. A few of them study at uni. They may as well start up a business now and use their names and profiles (and big money while they're earning it) to get it going.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun. Blessedare the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

I try and have a hit of golf with a few of the boys. I?m also setting up a business with (Swans teammate) Amon Buchanan. We?re setting up a clothing label so I do a bit of work on that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Roos et al actually have a policy of advising or guiding players re: life after football. Remember, its just football.

I read a few years ago that all the younger players are encouraged to study or do something to secure their long-term futures. It also helps to "keep them off the streets".
