Spriggs won the Cats the flag

When Spriggs left Sydney he was asked by a newspaper to differentiate between the culture of the Swans and the Geelong where he had been. He mentioned selflessness, tight bond, honesty, team vs individual etc. These were the very things that the Cats claim they based this year on. According to Cam Mooney (part way through the year), Geelong tried to mirror the Swans. In this week's Age in Melbourne, Tom Harley said he talked to Kirky on Brownlow night to get some pointers on approaching a GF. He said he was inspired by Kirk, who he regarded as the best captain in the AFL.

So shouldn't it be "Kirk won the Cats the Flag"?

Also, the comments from Spriggs changed the year, not just GF week.
        That's stating the obvious.

That's like Brisbane fans claiming the Swans flag as their own because Roos based his gameplan on the Lions.

It's hard to take but trust me, Spriggs had nothing to to with the Geelong flag!

There was a story a few months back about the management guru....... name escapes me......... Rod someone, were used heavily by the Cats during the offseason, after their review that brought Balme in, etc. etc.

No doubt a lot of the same techniques used by the Swans were put in place, even simply looking at the appointment of Harley as captain, i.e. someone that on the face of it does not look like a Geelong captain (as opposed to doing the obvious and appointing Ablett, Mooney or even Ling).

I'd say that sort of thing has had a huge impact in turing the Cats around compared to were they were the previous few years, i.e. a team many pundits had been ranking as top 4 for a few years based on talent alone but clearly not deliverying on that promise

edit : It's Ray McLean of course the article is here :

And there is something else *super* interesting in it :

"From all reports, Geelong's Thompson, like Roos, has grasped the concept and practicalities of player-power wholeheartedly. "You have to work closely with the coach. He's absolutely vital," Murphy says.

Coaches wanting to enlist a Leading Teams consultant are asked a series of questions before any agreement is reached.

McLean's work fizzled at Collingwood about 2001 because, as he writes in his book: "While Mick Malthouse actively used and encouraged the leadership group he seemed less interested in using the team's trademark to guide decisions ?"

Magpies' coaching staff, according to McLean, were "anxious from the outset what would happen if a good player received negative feedback"."

Ahhh yes there are good players at the Pies and then there are good players beyond criticism......... great culture down there at the Pies.

All jokes aside Harley, Costa and Cook have said from pre season this year that the Cats were going to implement the same critical self assessment and leadership driven decision making model that Sydney adopted when Roos took over.

It does not work for everyone (see article with comments about Collingwood) but with it now bringing premierships to two clubs who in the past have had trouble turning good sides into great it shows that it can be succesfull.

I often laugh when I read comments on her about people bagging how much decision making power our leadership group has on most decisions.

That very system gave our club the framework to step away from just being a good club to be a very succesfull great club and we should acknowledge the way we do things a lot more positively.

If the leadership group were the brains behind leaving Buchanan out of the game against Collingwood then it's not really very funny. Whoever made that decision made a bad one.

There's not a single Cortina in that midfield.

I am still amazed that people on here believe that leaving Buchanan out of the final was the wrong decision. He did not have a particularly good season and in the two games V Collingwood he was dreadful, so toweled up in round 21 he resorted to stupidity and spoilt his perfect record. I think he was damned lucky to even have been available for the final. The Swans seem to live by the rule of not changing a winning team and they stuck by that rule, no-one deserved to be dropped from that team V Hawthorn. The mistake in the selections for the final was not sticking by the same rule in regards to Hall.
