Where to for Schmidt, Moore & Laidlaw

There has been plenty of discussion on these boards about the lack of opportunities for these young players, yet people seem to be happy about the probable inclusion of Mattner into our squad and names such as Power, Tenace etc being bandied abount.

IMO Mattner will probably take the role as the tall running half back role to replace Tadgh or Mal if they move to the midfield. I thought that's what Laidlaw was drafted for?

If we are going to trade picks for these mid tier players then we will be giving them a look in our first 22. Surely this will mean even less opportunities for the younger members of our squad

And while I'm at it, why are we seeking draft picks for Schneider and Buchanan in a weak draft when we should have been doing so in the superdraft 12 months ago? DOH!

Agree completely.
Schneider and Buchanen are better players than Tenace, Power etc and we have midfielders burning it up in the two's that can't get in a look with the current squad.
Go for a quality CHB/FB (I have no idea who, they're the kind of player you have to draft cause no one wants to trade them, yet Sydney keep going for flankers) and NOT Miller.

Its not just a question of who is the better player but the role they can play in the squad. For some time we have been overloaded with smallish midfielders/forwards. Its hard to see how Schnieder and Bucky can be both fitted into the squad. One is a small forward who in the last couple of seasons has failed to develop his aerobic capacity to become a genuine forward/midfielder. Schnieder is simply not adaptable enough. Collingwood killed us in the final by rotating small forwards (Didak and Thomas) through the midfield. Bucky doesn't have the footskills to be a dangerous crumber around the forward line. One probably has to go and it should be Schnieder. He is still young enough to be picked up by a club.

You are not the first to point out that we should have done all this last draft, but that was only a week or so after we had lost a GRAND FINAL by 1 lousy point, who would have thought we needed big changes. What we should have done was have a knee jerk reaction then and put up everyone who missed a shot on goal and only got behinds

I got the sneaking suspicion that one of them will go for a direct swap for Miller.

Where to for them?

In the senior squad.

Schmidt is a talented but young outside mid in the Williams fold.

Moore is a potential tough in-and-under like Kirk or Bolton.

Laidlaw is a Goodes-like winger (well maybe not THAT good).

Still the future of the club.

Now is the time to let the 'senior' players go 'home'. I love Jude and Fossie but their time is at a peak. Either perform or find a new home.

The Schmidt I watch is a solidly built, one paced centreman. Good in the clinches, nice hands in tight, not spectacular by foot but fairly reliable, good enough penetration and sound vision (and an excellent set shot at goal).

Certainly valuable (in the Daniel Harris, Sammy Mitchell mould) but doesn't remind me in the least bit of Willo. I certainly would never describe him as an outside mid.

One of the issues the Swans have to manage is that the above description could be written about Bird as well, though we have to wait and see how he shapes up at senior level. And with Kirk looking capable of playing on for several years yet, you have to wonder if Schmidt and Bird will both fit into the same side.

Schmidt, Moore and Laidlaw -

IMHO not one of these players has shown todate that they are standouts.
Moore is another in and under in, similar to others we already have an abundance of - undersize hard at it midfielders. Cant see what he would bring to the team we dont already have.

Schmidt had a few chances looks ok but again smallish not quick but may offer some value in rotations?

Laidlaw - probably the one who could step up if given the chance but with the recruitment of Mattner and the improvement in Barlow its hard to see where he would fit in??

I dont really see that any of these have the talent or skills to get us through to the next GF over the next 2 years, except to give us some depth to cover any injuries.
