The other side of the coin....

Everyone here seems to be going nuts over the Scneider/Dempster trade and to some extent, I agree. I think there was a bit more potential in both that we could of used. However, the fact remains, Schneider had a craop 2007 & 2006, and Dempster has hardly set the world alight with the oppurtunities he's had.

I think most peoples grievance is what we got in return. But here's my point..... Have we traded away Schneider & Dempster to recruit Bird and allow for the permanent elevation of the likes of Schmidt & Barlow???

If we have, is it really such a bad trade? It seems everyone wants here wants to play Scmidt, Barlow, Phillips, Brabazon, Moore, White, etc but we have a pretty full list.

Will the two vacancies now created result in these players getting permanent spots???

Trading them, and trading them to a club where they have a relationship with the coach and can be part of a rebuild - if not of personell then at least of culture - is a far better way to go out than simply being delisted, which it seems at least one or two out of contract players would have been. Kudos to the club, perhaps, for doing the right thing by a couple of players, and finding them a decent home rather than tossing someone on the scrap heap.

A valid point, RP. I'm disappointed about the second round pick for two regular senior players and filthy that the Swans didn't at least swap first round picks with the Saints as part of the deal.

However, this is tempered by the fact we are finally turning over the team to give the youngsters a go (subject to what happens with Crouch and Mathews).

Hopefully more clubs take the Swans approach in future years so there is greater movement of players, even if it means a trade may not necessarily "be fair".

The Pelchen approach of not trading unless it advantages your own club can't be good for the overall system or for players who actually want to change clubs.

I'm sorry, but I'm not all that fussed about the two of them going,
surprised - yes, upset - no.
My personal nickname for Schneider was Pointboy and I found him more frustrating to watch in recent seasons than pleasurable. As for Dempster, from what I can gather from the papers, he was more like a donation to The Saints to relieve our list and cap pressures. If only we could have off loaded B1 in the process. All we need now is to get Crouch to retire and I'll be a happy little vegemite.
We all wanted to see the kids get more of a run, well now is their chance.

OK, but why didnt we trade Jude Bolton? Or McVeigh? Will Bevan, Matthews and Crouch play next year? Is Hall worth his salary?

That attitude just gets clubs backs up.

In the long run, clubs will tell Hawthorn to get stuffed and not deal with them unless the deal is heavily in THEIR favour.

The Sydney approach of trading for and trading away players to suit current list needs, even if the deal on paper doesn't seem even, will eventually work in Sydneys favour.

Clubs will not fear dealing with Sydney as they can see that Sydney is not in it to screw the other clubs over, just do the deal to suit the circumstances. eg, If Jonathon Brown was to have a bustup with Brisbane and wanted to move and Sydney and Hawthorn had similar deals on the table, I reckon our behaviour in the past few years would be valuable in getting us over the line.

Nobody is complaining that we traded Schnieder and Dempster, the fact is we got bent over is the sore point.

And how exactly is this trade related to Bird? He is ours for our last pick in the draft irrespective of this trade

As for the 2 vacancies in the seniors, the answer is no. Dempster got dumped after being one of our best against the Eagles and was ultimately replaced by Crouch, whilst Schneiders spot will be taken by Mattner so the guys you have listed are no closer to a senior game then they were before.

The simple fact is we gave away 2 players who each have potential to play another 200 games for a @@@@e pick in a shallow draft. One of them was given away as a favour FFS.

And its not the first time we've been shafted.

Ted Richards for a 1st round pick - OK player but we overpaid
Paul Chambers 2nd round - need i say more

Anyone who thinks we've done well out of this has rose colored glasses on

Your assumtpion is that clubs have the same coaches, recruiting staff etc. Otherwise a few different faces accross the table and any past goodwill will rightly, or wrongly ,go unrewarded.

Probably for the same reason some of us would like to see them go - no one wants them. Hall 2007 - no.
