Delisting!

If MOL was retiring it would really make you question the decision to trade Schneider. Obviously different players, but Schneider managed to produce goals consistently this year and I can't see we've really added anyone to the list who could supply the goals kicked by those two combined. Short of Davis at permanent FF with the ball being kicked to him.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

With Bird coming onto the list, we already have PLENTY of midfielders.
I reckon this is where most of the delistings will come from.
You can assume the following will be safe:
Schmidt
Laidlaw
Currie
D.O'Keefe
J.White
Barlow (elevated)
Jack (elevated)
P.Faulks (rumours that he might go, but only 1st year)
That leaves the following:
R.Brabazon (could come down to Braba or Thornton)
S.Doyle (may be retained on premise that no other real backups, still contracted until 2008)
H.Grundy (Will be kept)
J.Moore (pretty sure contracted until 2008)
S.Phillips (question marks over his size, and rumours of misdemeanor)
J.Simpkin (Was promoted last year, did not push for senior selection, gone)
K.Thornton (could come down to Braba or Thornton)
L.Vogels (Playfair could be seen as replacement)
Rookies:
L.Brennan (question marks, I am not convinced will be retained)
M.Davis (gone)
M.O'Dwyer
S.Rowe
E.Shaw (gone)
N.Smith
I think delistings will come from BOLDED players.Comment

Pace is a problem, which is why I'm not too sure about getting rid of Simpkin and Phillips.
In reality, they should probably be delisted.
But trade week saw us get rid of two quick blokes while we held on to all the snails like Jude and Mathews.
What was the rumoured Phillips misdemeanor?Comment

MOL won't be moving. Roos said they got Henry to support him and Hally and ROK.Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Playfair is the new Vogels. Vogels is gone. Unless Simpkin has a specific role allocated to him he can and should be gone (the last thing we need is another tough-nut midfielder). Doyle: is there any restriction on delisting a contracted player (apart from flow-on salary-cap problems)? I fear for Simon Phillips, who really should have a future. I believe that Faulks is more likely than not to be delisted, even though he's only been here a year. I suspect that both Thornton and Braba will be retained, even though surely only one of them has a long-term future. A few weeks ago, I thought that Bulldog Moore was in grave difficulties, but the AFL Canberra medal and associated publicity has given him a sudden happy vibe.
Today's fun fact: Sydney could get away with delisting just two players. Promote Barlow alone, then move both MOL and Leo to the 'outside veterans' list. However, this policy would be the end of the line for Jack because this is his 2nd year and rookies can't be kept on the rookie list for a 3rd. (unless we delist and re-rookie him). Unless I've ballsed up the rules, Sydney actually can keep Brennan for a 2nd year on the rookie list. (He turns 23 in March 2008.)Comment

Given this year's meant not to have much depth, clubs aren't going to be banking on picking up many gems in the rookie draft, meaning that keeping a full quota of 3 non-first year rookies is more likely than not, especially for us with our extended rookie list.
I haven't yet given up hope of Rowe being kept on as a third year rookie, though clearly this is only possible if they promote Jack (based on my assumptions of the rules). I think Smith is likely to get a second year too. Or at least, I'd give him a second year based on his rate of improvement towards the end of the season and his terrific performance in the GF.Comment
