    Hack of the week

    Welcome Henry Playfair.

Playfair by name Play@@@@ by nature.

    Age 24 years, 8 months
    Games 52
Career high possessions = 15 (vs. Brisbane 2006)
    Games 2007 = 1 (8 disposals)

Something not quite right with these numbers? What do we have here. A guy who has been in the system for 6 years, for a paltry 52 games.

Hmm, let's look at some averages

Average kicks - 7.9 (by way of benchmark, LRT average = 14.5).

If LRT = Gumby, then Play@@@@ = Pokey

Some might say this HOTW is harsh - they guy has not even arrived yet. All I can say is that I picked the farce that was Torture chambers, and I am pretty certain this guy is lining up to set new standards in frustration ala 'Why does Roos play this hack when play xxx (probably Jesse White) is languishing in Canberra).

If you want to see what the cat's fans think of this guy then read on here...this related to trade possibilities last year

The Cats' competitive tall forward Henry Playfair has attracted Adelaide's interest, without an offer being put for him. http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/r...246131561.html Playfair - 198 cm, 98 kg, drafted in 2001 (third round # 41)...we could certainly do with a forward of that size...

Usual rider applies here. Henry, I am sure you are a lovely bloke, but as a footy player, you make a very good fitness consultant.

post script - I honestly hope I am wrong.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

We essentially got him for free.
Pick 44 would have been used on Bird, now Bird will be picked up with #60.

We will only take 3 players INC Bird, therefore the pic was expendable. If we are able to get something out of Playfair we win, if we don't it is no big loss.

We could have kept both pick #44 and Dempster (or any player that will be delisted this year) and just passed on the pick instead of trading it for Playfair.

Why keep the player around when they don't have a future here? Better to move them on.

So instead with 44 we take Bird, that leaves 60 with nothing. May as well get some value of a pick we would not have otherwise used.

            Dempster was moving on anyway.

Playfair gets another chance with a new club, new coach and new environment.
He is for free because Dempster was going to be traded regardless.

But why? Is Sydney that great that a player like Dempster wasn't in our best 22? give me a break! We could've easily kept him and passed on one of our later picks. I'm sure he wasn't earning big bucks, so he wasn't a strain on the salary cap.

I can't for the life of me see how Sydney benefits from this trade, and i PRAY that Roos gives players like White, Bird, Murphy, Schmidt, Brennan etc a go next year, instead of playing proven hacks like McVeigh and Mathews every week, or this will all truly have been a waste of time and some BS story about trying to transform us into a faster, more attacking side.

I agree with you. I think Dempster was valuable. However, Roos has a plan I guess? And Dempster was not part of that.

Lets hope it will be a good move, we won't know until 2008.

We have no later picks to pass on. Some players needed to be delisted and Dempster was marked ....presumably ahead of Simpkin, Phillips, Crouch, Mathews, Shaw, McVeigh, Bevan, Buchanan, Bolton and Ablett....not to mention the vets in O'Loughlin and Barry.

Or, if he's really serious, 3 players need to be delisted, plus one for Playfair, plus one for every rookie elevation (Barlow, Jack, Brennan, Rowe, Smith all possibilties) so that's as many as 9 de-listings of which Dempster was one. Theoretically (or "theoreoretically" as my buider says...nearly makes me laugh every time ) O'loughlin and Leo can be added to the "outside" list, meaning 2 less delistings (but 2 less rookies). For those who aren't sure you can have 2 players (veterans or rookies) who are "outside" the 38, but who can still play. These are called "nominated rookies" if they are rookies, ie you don't have to wait for a long term injury. I believe we did this with Jack this year.

From what I understand you can have only 2 2nd or 3rd year rookies on the list, but they must be under 23, so Brennan cannot be rookied again this year.

I don't know if a player be re-rookied after a stint on the list (Shaw? Simpkin? Phillips?) would count as a second or first year rookie....probably 2nd but who knows?

                    Correct me if I'm wrong.

                    Cheers

Sorry...but was it Playfair instead of Miller. Because.... But there isn't a trade we.ve mad I've liked.

                          Playfair is a hack.
Give it two years and he will be delisted, like Spriggs and Chambers.
He will end like the other @@@@ with pick up from Geelong.

Playfair is obviously a long-shot. Sort of a replacement for Vogels, who seems sure to be delisted. At worst, a new play friend for LRT.

My guess is that he will be delisted next year. But who knows. Maybe he can make it at fullback?

Plenty of players at the fringes involve more selection guesswork than anything else. Few would have thought Scott Stevens would do quite so well at Adelaide (but still happy we got rid of him).

Of the 4 players involved in the Swan trades, Mattner is clearly the best of the lot, someone who could become central to the Swans conversion to a quick ball moving team next year.
