Schneider's manager on trade

I called up Liam Pickering on SEN this morning, who happens to be Schneider's manager. He said:

- Schneider was surprised to hear he was up for trade, and initially reluctant to go.

- Paul Roos told him that players like Schmidt and Bevan (!) were going to be pushed into the role that Schneider played.

- Sydney needed to make room for several rookies to be promoted.


I'm even more confused now. If a player was going to be pushed aside, one would think that it would be because he was past his prime. That's hardly the case for a 23-year-old.

The official line from Roos is that he was moved on because his football had stagnated at Sydney and I don't think anyone could disagree with that observation.

The difference is application. Bevan applys himself, Schneider doesn't.
Whilst Bevan is not the most talented bloke, he will always give 100%.

I'd rather a talented, inconsistent player than a less talented cannonball in a side that is already dour and slow.

I think that Roos got that half right. But instead of moving Schneids to St Kilda, he should have moved him into the forward line.

Yep why don't we revive the old swans tradition of talented but spineless, weak teams that underachieved. We have always have Brownlow Medallists but so few premierships. Schneider is a classic swans footballer circa 1970's - 1980's - ability, poor application and inconsistent. Give me dour (maybe the hairstyle is boring and the shorts too big?)and gutsy anyday.

I agree, he played his best football as a forward pocket, he's not a midfielder,or a back pocket.

Sorry to see Schneider go but acknowledge that he was patchy & wasted shots for goal on occasions...can't buy the line that Bevan was somehow more consistent. The guy is a lemon just like Dempster who I am content to see go.

I agree that we as supporters are yet to see the talented side of Paul Bevan, but talking to the coaching staff and players you soon realise that he impresses them every session at training with his talent-backed party tricks.

For example, left footed checksides from the pocket etc.

For a guy with supposedly this much talent, and not a lot of footy coaching behind him, there is plenty of the 'p' word. Unlike Schneider, he hasn't had every chance to realise that potential.

Strewth, how long do we have to wait for the talented side to come out?

I am not against the trading of Schneider but to now be moving another snail into the midfield with horrible skills, Jude Bolton all of a sudden looks a great keep. It will be nice if at the end of 2008 if someone can come up with some comparative stats on Schneider 2007/Bevan 2008 in the midfield if Bevan indeed plays there, and I dont mean Canberra stats

Bevan showed some signs of that in his first year andvery occasional glimpses last year. Again it may be an example of a player with some flair and skill being locked down ito a straightjacket role. That seems to have suited some players but it doesn't suit others. For such a talented player with enormous flair, Roos has not treated his players in the same way since 2003.

That's an incredible contradiction but true. However, for all of Roos flair as a player he didn't win a flag so maybe he thought all along that a different way was a better way. Worked once and nearly twice. perhaps though by the way he has traded he will go back to a more unpredictable style with flair.
