I can pretty much guarantee you that the winners would have come from the ranks of the first 200 starters (or even 500 for that matter).

Where do you think Crouchy started? In the first, say 200. Or in the second, say 50,000? Could there have been say, 180,000 people running in front of him.

The Sydney city to surf looks like it's started from the one starting point. I can't be sure ... I've never done it.

To my knowledge it is - they just have the break in between the groups - once the first group has started the next group comes forward to the starting line, etc.

Crouchy finished 34432nd. There were 39805 starters and 38676 finishers. His official time is given as 5hr32mins21secs.
With the splits given each runner would be wearing a timing chip which, when it passes over a grid registers the runners time. In this way, if you are a long way back at the start of the run, you find that the clock for you won't start until you cross the start line. The times recorded for him should be actual running times.

5hrs29 mins and 58 secs=Katie
5hr32 mins 21 secs.=Crouchy.....Its a toss up between the 2,but Katie for mine.
