Tall Forward. 193cm, 88kg. Subiaco

Possible comparison: He marks a lot of the ball around half forward, so eventually he might be compared to N Riewoldt, right now he could be J Riewoldt with just a bit more athleticism.

Why: They need an input of height and athleticism in their forward line and Gourdis would provide that. If Hall isn't marking the ball, which was often the case in 2007, the Swans don't have a target to kick to that can grab a contested mark in front of goal. Gourdis would be very useful for them, and it would give Roos the option of changing around his forward setup.

Worth a reach: Tayte Pears, if they decide that a taller backman is a higher priority than help up forward the Swans could draft someone like Pears. It might depend on what end Playfair will be played, and if White is ready for regular AFL action.

Hope they slide: Chris Masten, as some of their premiership players like Fosdike and Kirk are approaching the final years of their career the Swans will need to find a few more quality onballers.

No, no, no, no for Cyril Rioli.

We are not in a position as a club to take a punt on a player like Rioli. This is not too say he won't turn out as a great player but theire are just too many risks associated with him to be taken as out first pick at number 11.

Why are the risks associated with Rioli higher than for any other 17 or 18 yo?

I think more relevant is the fact that we need to find a quality KPP or two who can be ready in a couple of years time, and that that need is more pressing than a classy, quick player (even though that need exists too).

I suspect, though, that a player of Rioli's size and type is probably less likely to fall short of where people predict he might get to than a Rance, Pears, Gourdis etc.

We have not had many picks recently this low in the draft and we are also in a position list wise that the young talent we do bring to the club this year and next will need to be ready to play quickly.

By all means I have no issue with us looking at him at 26, but the rumours are that a number of other clubs have also started to baulk at a top 10 pick due to the preceived risks.

Is there any statistical support for the suggestion that players from country NT are a higher risk than those from anywhere else. There is a decent core of NT players who have forged very successful careers in the AFL and a fair number from other parts of rural and metropolitan Australia who have found it hard to settle in a new part of the country.

As for size, he's no smaller than plenty of other players who have been taken with high picks in the past and who have gone onto become super players.

Of this year's crop, Palmer is 180cm, Masten 179cm and Rioli 178cm. Not much to choose between them heightwise and all are being touted as possible / probable top 10 picks.
