    Club Swans?

I've just read the annual report for the Sydney Aussie Rules Social Club, and they're thinking of renaming it "Club Swans" , subject to approval from the members at the AGM on November 25th.

I think we should call the social club "Swannies" . This would clearly link the club as the Swans social home in a much more fun and friendly way than "Club Swans", which, IMHO, is a bit wanky. What does everyone else think?

I think Club Swans sounds better that calling it Swannies.

I think it's a bit of a daft idea. Firstly for the club, surely they want to appeal to as wide an AFL audience as possible. There are plenty of ex-pat Victorians, South and Western Australians in Sydney who don't support Sydney.

Secondly, I think even the Swans would benefit if the people of Sydney came to understand that the AFL does not equate to the Swans. Many non-AFL people at least have a passing interest in the Swans nowadays (judging by the number of strangers who stop and ask the score of games when I'm on the way home from a game and the number of colleagues who know enough about what the Swans did on the weekend to show they take some notice.)But many of them would struggle to name even one more club in the league.

The Swans will only get stronger if the game gets more coverage, and that means Sydney newspapers including the odd story not about the Swans (or Ben Cousins) and a general increase in awareness of the broader sport.

I doubt naming it Club Swans would stop them from going to it.

I doubt that the majority of them would struggle to name a team besides the Swans. The Swans have pushed hard on a branding that AFL in Sydney = Swans.

        I'm just being argumentative.

I have changed it now. Agree no use in being hung up on this.

Sounds like a club merchandise store...I am sure one of the other bird teams in the AFL has this as the name of their club shop.

Why do you think this is wholly & solely to do with spreading the AFL gospel in Sydney. Look at the NRL clubs leagues clubs, what are they there for? To raise revenue for their respective teams? How do they do that-by having pokies for those who enjoy a flutter & by providing people with a nightclub where they can get pissed at. And who scores the money, the respective clubs.

Look at Club Marconi. Look at Panthers. They have umpteen 1000 members; how many would have been to a game, maybe 5%. 10% at best. To Sydney people a "Leagues Club" is simply a place to go out at. I think the Swans know this.

Considering the location right in the heart of the tourist district right atop the Bourbon & Beef in the Cross, I think this is an awesome thing for the club to do. People go out, find out where the drinks are cheapest, and have a good night out with the Swans reaping the rewards.

This sort of thing should have happened in 1982. But I guess we didn't have Myles Baron-Hay running our club then.

I just wonder how good the place will be. And will be still be a haven for AFL fans whatever club they follow. All I ask is that we once again have a Swans shop. Talk about a potential cash cow. Well a Swans Official Merchandise store would kill it. Especially if you gave members a 10-20% discount when flashing their card at the register.

Club Swans is not just about footy. It is about revenue-raising. Hopefully from the prospective of myself as an out & out footy fan, it won't lose its footy atmosphere. And people barracking watching games will not be told to shut up by security, as has happened at the old Beaussie Rules Club.

PS:- Maybe Beaussie might look into a sponsorship agreement with Club Swans. He could have his name & hand prints put out on stone out in front of the club's entrance with the caption "Death to Victoria. Death to rugby league!"

Oh pullease. What is the point of having a Swans Leagues when nobody except diehard fans know what the hell it is.

It IS is Poofs Point you know as well. Maybe they could have a gay 'lets remember the Swantits' commemorate drag night or something?
