It's the right decision. It gives him a year to get his life in order - and gives him even more reason to do so. If by this time next year he is clean, then there's no reason he shouldn't be allowed to play again.

I don't know if it is the right decision.
It let's kids know that not only can drugs be dangerous, but the can cause much grief in other area of one's life.
But there doesn't seem to be any difference between now and the last time the AFL 'chatted' to Ben
There is the whole arrest thing where all the charges were dropped (for whatever reason)
Then there is the 'coke binge' in LA which as far as I know at this point is all heresay.
I'd suggest that the AFL is reacting to the constant criticism of their light stand on 'drug cheats'
The only problem is that Ben has repeatedly not tested positive for drugs by the AFL and apparently there are 4 - 6 other players who have tested positive twice.
If anyone was going to punish Ben at this point I would suggest that it should be West Coast (and they have) as it may affect his on field performance.
However the mkdia have been all over Cousins and beat up much of this story to the point where the AFL HAD to act.
I'd also question whether their actions are in Cousin's best interests.
He may now slide into a state of depression and binge and um, die.The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

The charge of bringing the game into disrepute is tenuous at best....
After all, he hasn't been found guilty of anything, tested positive for anything or done anything but dress poorly in public. Evewrything else is wild, unproven speculation.

I think I've changed my mind. The punishment wasn't enough.
He's allowed to play in the state leages?
I heard on the radio this morning that he doesn't have to worry about money next year because the advertisers are knocking down his door to use his face to advertise their product.
WTF? Things go better with Coke? I'd rather switch to Pepsi if that's the case, and I'll drink water before I drink Pepsi.
What type of punishment is that? Where's the deterrent?

Maybe stop thinking of it as a punishment and it will make more sense.
The AFL's job is not to dish out retribution but to balance the needs of the broader game with those of an individual, and set some guidelines around the behaviour required of players if they want to continue playing.
They are not the state, they are not a criminal court. They do not have the power (or the ethical right) to decree that he can't play in any other league. Nor do they have the power to decide that no other organisation is allowed to pay Cousins any more for other activities for the next year. That is simply none of their business. It is up to every other organisation that may think about employing Cousins in some capacity what the risks and benefits of doing so are.Comment

Caught on video snorting and partying on the QLD coast. Current Affair ran with the story and ran footage. Also played a recorded phone concersation with his manager Ricky Nixon who went "off tap" and hurled abuse and expletives.
Sigh, this is turning into another Shane Warne media frenzy. Nothing he will do that won't be under the microscopic attention of the waiting vulturic media.Comment
