    Juniors are overrated?

I think this guy just didn't have anything else to write about except misconstrue Paul Roos' perceptions of junior players being perhaps too young and perhaps not being developed enough to play footy at 18 y.o.

You've got to wonder if this bloke even read Roos' original article, he has misconstrued it so much.

I actually think this guy has a point. Roos has and never will have to deal with rebuilding a side from the young guys up. Roos has had a great fitness team + technology in his coaching stint so far and with him not keen to go on past 2009 I can't see him ever needing to rebuild.

Where the journo goes wrong is the implication that Roos does not appreciate young footballers - I suspect he may have a bias against people who take this view and therefore sees it everywhere he goes.

          I don't understand that article.

It's true that Roos didn't need to build the side which has had recent success, but it's clear that if we are to maintain our current success it's going to come down to his teams drafting success over the last 3 to 4 years.

There is a massive pre-occupation in Melbourne at present with re-building your club from the draft with 18 year old's, which to this point in time has not been proven to be the correct strategy.

Paul Roos, Andrew Ireland, Stuart Maxfield and Ricky Barham clearly don't believe that rebuilding through the draft only is the right way to go to maintain the current side we have.

If we can maintain our current position with the addition of players like D O'Keefe, Moore, Laidlaw, Thornton, White, Schmidt, Vesper, Meridth & Bird through the draft. While promoting rookies such as Barlow, Orreal and Irish Murphy and trading for Mattner, Playfair and potentially the best KP Forward we can get our hands in the next couple of years, then good luck to us.

You don't need to tread the same path as everyone else to be succesful.

The factual observations that Roos has not yet had to build a team from scratch are correct. He has had success in turning journeymen into very very good footballers but has generally had a decent core to work around.

Where the article misses by a country mile is in linking that observation with Roos' suggestion that the draft age is too young. What on earth has one got to do with the other?

Spot on. They think Hawthorn's model is the blueprint for 'rebuilding', or more correcting, building a good team. The jury is still out on that.

Looking at what Geelong and Sydney have done in recent years without early draft picks, you'd have to say that you don't need to sacrifice on-field performance over a number of seasons to win a premiership.

Regardless, the guy has totally missed the point Roos was making.

What the article also tells us is that very few of the Melbourne media know much about our reserves and draftees. If you ask a rabid Melbournian supporter who does nothing but talk footy, about any player outside our team we pick every week they wouldn't have a continental.

Ask Walls and Sheahan and they wouldn't know either. The likes of these and Ralph have no idea what is going on behind the scenes at our club and you can expect these people to have us out of their top 8's before the season on the premise that we have an ageing list.

Convenient (or just lazy) reporting of the few facts he chose to include.

Says we only blooded 1 draftee from 2005 & 2006 - whilst strictly speaking that is true it ignores the fact that from the Rookie Drafts of those years we ultimately promoted 5 rookies, with 4 of them playing senior footy.

As usual the topic of few injuries - highlights that in 2007 "used only 33 players, equal second-lowest after Geelong". I assume he's also having a crack at Geelong then - that it was lack of injuries that wallpapered over all Geelong's cracks and got them over the line to win this year's flag?
