    Nathan Ablett retires

Can't help but wonder if his father played a part in this decision?

But I can see him coming back in 2008....

Also, just read from the Cats' main website and he's only taking time out.

Not surprised really. It took them a few seasons before they could convince him to join them.

Maybe Roosy should move in for the kill and get him on our team!

Interesting how news outlets differ. The ABC have been saying he was taking a break. Nothing about retiring. I know who I am more likely to believe.

The Geelong Advertiser also says he was taking a break to think about his future, nothing about retiring.

Agree 100%. I know we can't get into people's heads and understand the demons they face, but I find it hard to listen to anyone complain when they have an opportunity to set up their whole life because they are talented in a sport they love.

Puts meaning to the phrase ' flawed genius'. But honestly, who wrote this headline Ablett Retires?Anna Coren?and yes he seems a bit of a prima donna, but considering the attention attracted by his old boy this week, you can hardly blame him. He'd have one big game at start of 08 and have the journos camped on his front lawn. Thats why he didnt come thru the elite 18s ranks.

He might miss part or all of the 2008 season but he won't retire.

Pretty poor form from Mark Thompson to weigh into the debate.

Why he is the coach and knows a little bit more about it than the media i assume.

I think young Nathan is as far from prima donna as you can get.
Our own Luke's dad (if I have the right brother) chose farming over footy.
Football isn't the b-all and end all of everything. Watching the circus surrounding Cousins this year and also the circus that continues to surround his dad (who retired nearly 20 years ago) is enough to turn anyone off.
I think he sounds like a pretty smart kid who recognises that you can't just run out and play any more - footy is all consuming and with his surname he can't hide from the media or have anything near a normal life.
                          Give the kid a break.

                            Is that a serious question?

Why would the coach put his views in the media? Who is that helping?

                              Poor kid.
Geelong should respect his wishes. He's had a taste. If he doesn't want to play, what's the point? Give his spot to a kid who wants to play.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
