    2007 Score Card - #4 Ben Matthews

    (On behalf of RP ...)

Tis a long off season... And whilst we have the time on our hands, let's critique each players performance in 2007.

Let's go in numerical order and each have our two cents worth on their performance for the year. Players will get changed/updated as soon as the dust settles on each players review and everyone's had their say.

Most importantly, everyone needs to give each player a rating out of 10 so we can reasonabley measure their performance... In your opinion of Course

    Rate away......
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

    1/10.

He may not be too old, but he is too slow these days. Still looks like a deer in the headlights when he gets the ball, he should be over that by now.

Did some good things in 2005 but should consider his future with the club.

I thought he was better than recent years but I've never been a fan.

      Definitely not the future.

      3/10.

I think that the thinking on Mathews is that he has been around for 10 years so he must perform some role in the team, but that no one really knows what it is. To drop him now would be to admit to 5 years of picking him for no reason.

In past years I would have rated him higher because of his defensive ability. However, this year, as I noted a few times during the season, he has been playing very selfishly. He too frequently ignores the ball and other opposition players just to ensure that his own player doesn't get the ball. That costs goals!

He does add something with his defensive skills. But the reality is he doesn't give us enough to warrant selection every week. He's another one who was riding a large wave of reputation in 2007 to get selected. How the hell did he play all games?

Gives us almost nothing going forward and wouldn't run out of sight in a dark night.

That probably says more about the crappy form of many of our players rather than any semblance of form by Mathews, considering he played all games it's not surprising he out-voted many good players.

Perhaps the most damning indictment of our season I've heard yet. IN past seasons, you can kinda see how he did a job (however limited) - now he is baggage pure and simple.

1.46/10. Frustrating is the only word I can use to describe this bloke. Even his defensive skills are on the wane.

                        5/10 was ok at times.

It all comes down to what the coach asks his players to do. Of course sometimes that is not going to match what the fans want their players to do. However, the coaches mark the Best and Fairest and all we have is our little rating system in the off-season.

Matthews 2007 6/10 has had better seasons individually but playing all 23 games was a good team player who once again completed the job asked of him by the coaching staff.

5/10 Reasonably consistent season. Thought he did some good tagging jobs on reasonable opposition but is now struggling to match it with the new generation of fast midfielders.
Snuck forward and kicked a few handy goals this season. I still shut my eyes when he has the ball in traffic in the D50. Definitely better back end to the season.

I actually thought Benny had a better this year than last. So looking back at 2006 where he was 2/10, 2007 = 4/10
