    Doyle hasn't retired

OFFICIALLY, Stephen Doyle retired from AFL football.

But if you ask the towering 203cm ruckman ? who will play in the SANFL with Norwood next year ? his time at elite level is far from finished.

Despite managing just 47 games in eight seasons with Sydney, Doyle, 26, says he still holds an ambition to be redrafted.

"I thought it was time for a fresh start," Doyle, drafted from South Adelaide in 1999, said. "If I have a good year this year (2008) I probably could end up putting my name back in the draft.

"I'm confident I can play at that level. It's more about opportunities in Sydney next year and getting back to enjoying my footy, I think.

"I was told they'd be playing young ruckmen in Sydney and giving them chances before me which I can understand ? I'd been on the list for eight years."

Having consulted family and friends about his decision, Doyle chose to come back to Adelaide and in a frantic trade week, he nearly landed at West Lakes.

"There was almost a trade with Adelaide," Doyle said. "It would have been a bonus. I had already made the decision to come back to Adelaide and then that popped up as a possibility."

Instead, Doyle is determined to regain his love for the game by playing his part in a Redlegs revival in 2008.

"To me this year is more about just enjoying the footy and trying to get some consistency," Doyle, who rucked in the 2006 AFL grand final, said.

One of three major recruits headed to The Parade ? with fellow ex-Swan Matt Davis and Nick Gieschen (Port Melbourne)? Doyle tossed up between the Redlegs and North Adelaide.

And with Norwood in desperate need of a ruckman ? Tim Nicholas and John Meesen have both departed ? Doyle was a perfect fit.
