About bloody time. Give it to a promising kid and see if he can make his name in it. If you have a look at the various players who have worn number 14 over the last however many years.. You will find two champions... and a whole bunch of nobodies. That doesn't tarnish the great tradition that the number has. You want its history to continue, not stop at Paul Kelly.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

I'm just happy they are giving it to someone. IMO it was a bit silly not having someone wearing it for 5 years. It's only a number.
Theres only 3 players worthy of it IMO Goodes,B2 and Tiger. That number has been worn by the two greatest players ever to wear the Red and White not some bloody rookie.
With that attitude Kelly should never have worn number 14.

Also nobody will be expecting Bird to be another Kelly or Skilton.

Dont get me wrong Big Al i would love to see the gurnsey too,but not on a rookie.
Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

More duds than champions have worn number 14 (not saying Bird is either mind you).

The Swans made more of the number than was warranted.

Stephen Allender,Tony Franklin,Billy Picken,David Young,Michael Byrne and Michael Kennedy were all wearers of 14 between Skilton and Kelly.
On what I've seen of young Bird I think its worth the punt.

Totally agree with Des and Hammo.

They have done a great deal to ruin the #14 for a while IMO.
People here now think of it as a reward, which is not what it's all about.
The only way the jumper can continue to mean something is to give it away like any other jumper and wait for someone to happen to become a star while wearing it.
THAT is what makes it significant.

Exactly. You don't just keep handing the same number to champions and then call it a special number. The player adds to the jumper's history himself.

Who gives a toss who gets which number. I hope everyone doesn't make a big deal of it and just lets Bird play.

The reason Craig Bird has been given number 14 is that he,like Paul Kelly, was born and bred in NSW and the club think he has the promise to do well at AFL level.
A nice gesture to give it to a NSW lad.Good luck to him!

Exactly, Kelly was just a skinny nutcase chasing a ball, in his early days.

I doubt the above players would want to change their numbers no, anyway.

Bird, 18, is the first of the Swans' NSW scholarship players to be included on the club's senior list, an under-18 All-Australian and a member of the Swans' undefeated reserves side of 2007.

Good to have 14 finally back out on the field again!

Bird won't disappoint. The year in the canberra league with the Swans will do him wonders. Looked very accomplished. Him and Moore will fight it out but i hope somehow both can succeed.
