Thoughts from yesterdays game (merged thread)

I'm still absolutely shattered about eski.

But in the words of Ben Cousins "such is life", and we must all move on.
Stop dwelling on the negatives, and lets focus on some of the positives that came out of yesterdays NAB cup match.

Craig Bird - This kid looks like he'll be forming the nucleus of our midfield for the next decade. I loved everything I saw. He took command, he was positive in his movements, has great awareness and he's hard at it!

Martin Mattner - Even before Mal's injury this guy looked like he'd been playing in the swans back half for the last 5 years. He'll slot straight in, and with Kennelly, provide some run from defence. He's stocks have risen with eski's injury.

LRT - Looked to be back to his 2005 form. Just looked like a senior player, which is hard to believe after the years of fans berating this guy. was excellent in his attack of the ball, and seems to have improved his disposal.
He will be another important cog in the backline to allow the likes of B2 to also provide running attacks from the backline.

Matty O - Move over Micky O, now we've got Matty O! I doubt the kid will get much seniors time (if any) but he looks to have a bit of pace and skill. Those attributes have been something lacking in the swans outfit of recent years.

ok, ok, I said lets focus on the positives, but... I can't help it.

Paul Bevan - drop this man from the squad, send him back to the planet he came from! Yes, he can tackle... big whoop, the guy makes waaay too many mistakes. and they're never little mistakes, they're always horrible, unforgivable turnovers. I didn't see one thing yesterday that pointed to any improvement in his game.

Ryan Brabazon - Waste of space on the list, it will definitely be his last year.
Although he tried hard, and picked up a few possessions late in the game, he was way out of his depth. He lacks disposal and decision making skill. Will never make it.

Sorry if I've been too harsh on those two, but that's just the way I saw it.

All in all, I was very impressed with the youngsters, and it shows that we do have talented guys playing in the Canberra league.
Their disposal in the first half, and their intensity for the whole match was inspiring.

yeah, I know.... but I wanted to make it football related.

A certain Kelly was a courageous captain.... sadly, it wasn't Ned.

Just don't like to give him too much credit.

BTW,I think Kels, had "Ned" as one of his nick names.

I was thinking the same thing. Given our inexperienced line-up, Bevan should have stood out yesterday but he was shown up by the kids. He might be able to tackle but I reckon about half result in a free kick to the opposition.

To add to your list of positives I thought Thornton had a terrific game and showed some good evasive skills.

Bevan is the Swans equivalent of The Scarecrow - he needs a (football) brain.

IMHO if you have courage on the field (which Bevo does) you can get by on only having one of either Footy Smarts or Skills - the courage makes up for not having both. Unfortunately for Bevo, he has neither Footy Smarts nor Skills.

              I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

                Thoughts from yesterdays game

Very impressed by the young brigade I can't believe I left the ground after a 2 point loss with a big smile on my face. Also getting to meet the great Bobby Skilton.......what an utter legend and nice guy

                The positives

O'dwyer - wow this guy has got pace to burn and could be the little goalsneak crumbing forward we have been looking for. If he keeps this type of performance up during the rest of the practice matches he should be a certainty to be promoted.

Bird - How this guy didn't get drafted in the 2006 draft is beyond me. Has a football brain and just moves like a footballer oozes talent. Pencil him in for a debut in the first 3 rounds. Welcome back number 14

White - Lump of a lad who moves well could have a big future hopefully will get a taste of senoir action this year.

Mattner - I'll have him over schneider and Dempster any day, yesterday confirmed he will be a very valuable pick up indeed looks like he has played for the swans for years. He will turn the ball over from time to time but he is always trying to create. Very important with Melcho's injury.

LRT - Welcome back big guy a 100% fit he is going to be super important to our back half just knows were to go.

Mcveigh - watched his game with interest I think he stepped up today. He really sharked a few taps really well and might be released a little from his tagging roll. He coughed it up but a few times but it was actually the young guys further up the ground running to the wrong spot which inturn caused him to hold on to it a little longer. I am going to make a statement and say this is going to be his break out year.

Faulks - good spoiler and was solid down back without getting much of it, down the track he could be the option for the 3rd tall but still a little lean.

Moore - looks a million dollars when he gets it just needs to find more of it.

                Negatives

Buchanan - Work his butt off today and really tried to lead from the front but just got caught with it to often. Just the way Buchy plays some days it will come off for him but today it didn't. Expect a very big year for him none the less

Bolton - Just doesn't cut it anymore his effort at a super goal when he had 3 guys on there own in the 3rd qtr was a disgrace. Jude your star is fading fast.

O'keefe - A Barry Crocker a bad day at the office indeed just looked disinterested.

Melco - Just shattered for him the way he marshalled the back half and telling the young guys were to go. He is out and out class and looks a captain in the making. Actually had dinner next to the great man Bobby Skilton and he said then that it was season ending. He had a grin from ear to ear when I mentioned what he thought about the performance of our youngsters.

Brabazon - got plenty of it but his kicking let him down today still looks to have some upside.

O'keefe - Just didn't look the part today but has bulked up as from all accounts he was rather skinny last year........looks a little slow aswell.

Number 47 - not sure which rookie it was he pulled out of a marking contast when backing back in the 1st qtr. He realised straight away what he had done and had his head down. Heaps of the boys come up to him straight away, it was also good to see that he was left on the ground. Having said this the young guy did plenty of other good work and besides the mentioned episode looks to have a future also

Lots of upside and we looked really sharp and full of run should be alot of pressure on the regular guys this year

Didn't look the part - thats an understatement. DOK looks like he went into the garden shed and had a severe accident with the hedge clippers and a bag of lime. An absolutely shocking white tipped mullet!

That mullet was having sharing its Barry Crocker with the other O'Keefe. At least Ryan had some bright spots during the day.

Also forgot to mention Grundy in the positives is really good when it hits the ground and if only he was quicker..but most will struggle to keep up with buddy

Bevan in the negatives ............brain explosions enough said

I have know watched the replay

Dan O'keefe Looked a whole lot better missed out on a few of the little things that he did that i didn't see watching at the ground.

You dont see on the replay (number 47) Bruce pull out but he did alot of other great things so definately more a positive than a negative.

On the replay you also don't get to appreciate the amount of work and positioning Mcveigh does no doubt something he has learnt from tagging the competions best players.

Bird.............well only seen him play once and I am a massive fan get on him for the rising star. I don't usually get excited about new players but this guy could be anything, worth the admission price on his own just hope he stays fit and gets the opportunities this year

During the commentary Danny Frawley at one stage said "Bird's in a different class". Not bad praise considering some of the others out on the field.
