    Caps

Why is it that for the last couple of years we are subjected to receiving crappy designed caps WITH OUR MEMBERSHIP when if you look at the caps the coach and the players wear you`ll notice they are a better designed colour. ( Player - mostly red. ) ( Mug Punter - mish mash of white & red neck looking. )

GIVE ME A DECENT @@@@ING CAP FOR @@@@ SAKE !!!!!

I'm not sure why you'd wear an AFL brand cap, regardless of how it looks

Maybe such caps can be acquired for an outlay of $30 or so. Anyone is free to go and spend on a higher quality cap if they so desire. The caps they give us aren't free to produce. I don't particularly want to be charged an additional $30 for my membership just so that I get a better cap when the half dozen or so I already have filling a drawer do the job well enough.

I don't want a cap each year...when you include the Premiers caps etc I now have 7-8 caps and I wear the one that has the best design rather than the latest year

Other club memberships give things like scarves etc. So I think they should alternate every year...cap, scarf, bag etc. It doesnt have to be anything too expensive. Its just something thats says "I'm a Swans member"

Totally agree. Every year my kids and I collect our hats, even though I'm the only one that ever wears it. We now have a collection of what seems like hundreds and I just can't throw any away!
I usually have to buy one or two new scarves every year or so, so even just alternating between hats and scarves would help and at least the kids would wear the scarves.

I've got stacks of caps. I tend to wear my original one. It's very, very, very faded - but the peak fits over my RayBans better. These things are important.

I've got a few scarves from premmie club and such; and a back pack (and who can forget the useless radio!!).

They should just make it easy and give everyone a say, $50 voucher and let everyone decide for themselves. That'll at least help the parents out if they want to buy the kids a guernsey.

Why not? It would appear to be the logical solution.

Why would you charge everyone $x00 dollars for a membership and then give them a $50 voucher? Why not just cut the cost of memberships by that amount.

My guess is that the caps they give us are pretty cheap to acquire in the volume the club distributes them. Certainly nothing like $50. They are meant as a small incidental sweetener - and one idea behind the initial distribution was to help create a sea of red and white in the crowd, though that's arguably a bit redundant now given we all own multiple red and white caps.

Because a say, $50 voucher goes a long way to helping a family (who may have mortgage repayments for instance) buy a gurnsey for the kids (or even for themselves) AFTER having spent $XXX or even $XXXX on membership. Maybe I want 10 badges for my scarf instead. $50 would buy me 10 badges.

Trust me Lizzy, all the crap you get at the supporter stand is very cheaply mass-produced and it doesn't really hurt the club to hand it out for free. They would be writing it off somehow.

... on the other hand, it does make for a great "collection". You know, Member 2004, Member 2005, Member 2006, etc.

But that's missing the point. If that "$50" is so valuable to all the families with mortgages to pay, why charge it in the first place. Why not just reduce memberships by $50. Then some of those families can choose to spend it on their mortgage rather than buying merchandise they don't really want.

The answer (I suspect) is that it costs the club nothing like $50 to give us the merchandise they do. So any reduction in membership fees would be relatively trivial if they were to stop giving it to us.

Yet, if I were to buy a cap, it would cost me $30.

I did say in my post that it doesn't cost the club much to supply 30K+ caps ... even if they gave us a choice of merchandise (i.e. this OR this OR this OR this) it still isn't going to cost the club (if at all).

It's simple ... by giving a voucher for say, $50, the "$50" is still going to be written off by the club; plus they have the added possible bonus of people paying a little extra to get something they really want, i.e. a gurnsey. It's win-win.

Economics 101: Produce as cheaply as possible, sell at a high price, make profit.

Merchandise sales make up a large proportion of the club's income. Of course it would hurt the club if they gave it away!

I've always assumed that it was a cheap marketing ploy and it makes the members feel like they got something extra.

We'll probably get that as the little "gift" for being a premiership club member!!
