I get to watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report by having Foxtel; that's worth the money on its own, the footy is just a pleasant bonus.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

You pay $15 to go and see a movie and have 20 minutes of ads shoved down your throat - not much difference IMO.

And the standard package is about $50.

Yep we have Foxtel in Melbourne - $49 per month.

Get AFL and NBL - all I need

(Go the Melbourne Tigers BTW for tonight)

Sure, and I didn't pay even that as I was on a trial.
But people actually pay in excess of $100 for the full package, which is full of ads.
If I were paying that much (or even "only" 450 per month) I would expect a red carpet treatment, with no ads.

As for the movies, what you pay for there is the big screen.
That's a pretty big difference IMO.
Also, most of the 'ads' are movie previews which I generally enjoy.

            Foxtel is still a jip.

(Geez I love starting the annual Foxtel vs FTA debate!!
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Fair enough, that seems a bit more reasonable - if you consider paying $100/month for TV reasonable.

              .

I'll have to come to your place next time I want to watch Star Wars, on your 20 metre movie sized screen

For me most of the dozens of Foxtel channels didn't interest me.
I wanted it mainly for the Footy, but to get that I needed the whole package as well.

I don't mind seeing a preview for the new Batman or Indiana Jones film at the movies.
I do mind having to see what's coming up on the new Ben10 episode later that night every15 minutes.

I have to disagree with some of the posters here that there are no ads on Foxtel, which is not true. Almost all channels shown in basic package have ads (e.g. TV1, Fox8, Arena, Fox Classics, National Geographic, Discovery etc.). A lot of times programs are even interrupted by ads the same way as on FTA. If you want to pay extra for packages like sports channels, movies, lifestyle, etc some channels like UKTV and Ovation have ads interrupting programs as well, while movies and sporting events are normally not interrupted by ads. So it actually comes down to personal preference. Personally I'm planning to cancel it because in my opinion I don't get value for money, because I don't watch 70% of the channels that I need to subscribe in order to get Fox Sports 1 (for AFL), UKTV, Ovation, Comedy Channel and Movies. Ads do not annoy me in particular, but poor picture and sound does, especially on Sci-Fi channel and some other I would expect to get a better P&S.
Once Foxtel ebcomes more flexible in terms of allowing us to select and pay only for those channels we want to watch I'll reconsider it.

I really only have Foxtel for the sport. Between AFL, NRL, English Premier League and cricket tours (all commercial free during games except some ads in between cricket overs) I feel that I well and truly get my money's worth.

We mainly have Foxtel for the footy, but I'm right into horse racing, and harness racing so it's fantastic. There are nowhere near as many ads, as some are making out.

I haven't missed a game in Victoria for more than a decade, and I have Foxtel so I'm happy

It is when your computer is located next to the TV the kids watch in the family room.
And then there are the volume issues.
But they are there when the FTA is on anyway.
That TV is banned from having the volume over 6.
