On his form last weekend I can see why he struggled to hold down a permanent position at the Crows. I was not aware that he is a footballer with the inclination to fly for big species - very un Crowbotlike! Three unsuccessful flys last weekend, two of which cost goals. Run and carry almost non existant. Is he the type of player prone to an occasional shocker, or have we bought a dud? .

I was pleased when we recruited him, because he had always seemed to play well against us. Now I?m not so sure. Anybody else who saw last weekend?s game have a comment?

Mattner looked quite good in the couple of pre-season games I caught this year, but I wasn't at Manuka. Hopefully it is just an annomaly.

Whilst we've had a cple of huge successes with recruiting mature age players (Hall, Maxfield, Williams, Lockett), for the most part, we've been a dumping ground for everyone else's rejects.

Hope that isn't the case here.

You base this on 1 pre seasons game?

Actually I saw three out of the four, and yes, he was pretty good in the first two. That is why I was so disappointed on Saturday.

My Crows-supporting Adelaide rellies rate Mattner as a player but are of the opinion his decision-making lets him down.

I think that is way off the mark. No club is going to get a 100% record but the Swans' successes with mature recruits is pretty solid.

Other than the four you've mentioned, in the modern incarnation of the club (ie since they lured Barassi north and started to behave like they had some clue of how to be competitive in this league) you can add to that list of successes:

Ball (even though I thought at the time we paid too much for him in terms of picks, I think he proved to be excellent value in the end)
Roos
Schauble
Jolly (decent enough value for trade cost)
Bolton
Davis
Schwass - cost a bit given we lost Grant, but the trade only happened because Grant wanted out

The jury is probably still out on whether Richards was worth what we paid for him but he's certainly been handy and cost the equivalent of Josh Willoughby.

Similarly for Everitt, but we always knew we'd got him a year or so too late. If the miraculous happened and he rucked the team to a premiership this year we'd all be smiling, and even if he doesn't, having him spend this year with the likes of Orreal, White and Currie could prove valuable. For a late second round draft pick he certainly won't be considered a write-off.

There are a number of mediocre players who cost moderately little, and provided moderately little in terms of number and quality of games (Ahmat, Orchard second time around, O'Connor, Allison by the time he got to us).

There are the write-offs, like Tingay (who cost next to nothing in draft terms).

And then there is the big bust in Chambers, though again, it was only a mid-range pick we traded for him.

(I have no idea what was traded for Dermie).

On balance, you'd have to say that the club has done pretty well out of recycled players. I doubt many other clubs can boast a list of names like Lockett, Maxfield, Roos, Hall and (I suspect eventually) Craig Bolton who have left a real legacy on their adopted club, together with a list like Davis, Williams, Ball and Jolly who made an unquestionable contribution to the club winning a flag, plus 2 others in Schauble and Schwass who won club B&Fs (as have/did Lockett, Hall and Williams).

Far more boom than bust IMO.

I was there on Saturday and like ORB I was pretty disappointed in Mattners game. He appeared to me to be trying to do to much, trying to look spectacular whereas the other two games he looked like he was just trying to fit in with our style. Maybe now that he's made a goose of himself he'll just play his normal game and not try so hard.
I have a Crow supporting friend and he reckons Mattner will be a perfect fit for us.

I think Mattner will prove to be a good acquisition but I hope his performance on Saturday doesnt happen too often as he was very poor. But he wasnt the only one who didnt have their best game. Still think it was a more then reasonable trade overall however.

A bit disappointing about Mattner's embarrassing efforts flying for the big ones.
