Sydney to take on new look - Melbourne Herald Sun

Melbourne Herald Sun, Australia - 7 hours ago
THE Sydney team for Round 1 of 2008 will look radically different to the Swans side that was emphatically bounced out of the first week of the 2007 finals ...

As many as five "generation-next" players could be named for the Swans' season opener against St Kilda at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.

Swans coaching co-ordinator John Longmire says 19-year-old 2007 draftee Craig Bird, Kieren Jack, Ed Barlow, Heath Grundy and Jarred Moore have all done enough in the pre-season to be picked.
Would be great if it happens, but do we beleive them?

Great if it were to happen, but I have heard this before only to be disappointed.

Well it is possible compared to the team that played the EF v Collingwood.

We're without Dempster and Schneider (traded) and Everitt, Fosdike, Richards(?) and Malceski (injured).

So if we look at that, Kennelly and Mattner in for Dempster and Malceski, still leaving 4 openings (the ones below are NOT direct swaps). Keep in mind that Barlow played, so lets assume that he will keep his spot.

        Grundy in for Richards
        Moore in for Schneider
        Bird in for Fosdike
        Jack in for Everitt

Would like to see Crouch out as well and have the "swap" of Jack for Crouch and White for Everitt.

Whatever happens, we will need to see some new faces in the Rd 1 lineup or we won't have 22 on the field!

Monty will also be an 'in' from that finals game.

Been saying all along that Bird, Jack, Barlow, Moore and Barlow will all play. Possibly White as well if they want to go that second ruckman to counter King & Gardiner.

The way Thornton was going, he was a possibility as well.

We will be a vastly different team than last year which will have good and bad points come round 1.

It might be time to try Barlow in a defensive KP role and LRT to ruck (or vice versa, but I prefer the former for this game).

Ablett is another who missed the Pies final and is more likely than not to be squeezed into the team (though possibly not for round 1 given he too has an injury niggle).

From Mike's team, Crouch must be a definite "out" given he's not played any pre-season footy.

Is Gardiner a definite to play?
I thought they might play King with Kozi as back-up.

                        Yep, all fair points.

I just sensed that it was close to the start of a new season because the usual rhetoric was coming out.

Yes I agree with your comments, but what is going to happen to the likes of Matt O'Dwyer - who will be the rookies upgraded to the list to replace the two long term injured ?? Matt should be a great chance..........

Well, I read soemwhere that because we have two players on the veteran list (i.e outside the senior list) that the Elevate a rookie for someone on the long term injury list does not apply to us this year. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Rotten luck for Matty if it is true, he's gonna be a Gun!

                              No, that's not correct.

A club can always elevate someone to the senior list if there's a long term injury (salary cap permitting). However, if you have either one or no 'outside veterans', you don't have to wait for a LTI to elevate a rookie. You can nominate them to play regardless of the injuries.

There's no point, though, in elevating a rookie until you're about to play him (or at least want to name him as an emergency). Jack, Bird and Moore are ahead of him at the moment (and should be, based on form) and competition for spots for smaller players is going to increase as the likes of Fosdike, Crouch, Schmidt and Laidlaw get over their injuries. O'Dwyer needs to keep doing what he's been doing well into the season before he comes under consideration, I suspect. And even then he faces competition from Smith, Brabazon (who the Swans said last Monday they expect to debut this year) and hopefully Veszpremi.
