    A sudden thought

Watching the Geelong/Port game, I just had a thought. Sydney have two very aged key forwards in Hall and O'Loughlin. It won't be long before they are gone, and we are left without much in the forward line. Now, I think White could well be a good replacement for Hall, but it is too early in his career to tell, and even if he is, that still leaves another key forward spot vacant. Then, my thoughts drifted to a certain Nathan Ablett.

It is no secret the younger Ablett hates being compared to his father, and being in the spotlight in that respect was undoubtedly the reason he chose to retire/take a break/whatever it was. However, I think it was Billy Brownless I saw saying that Ablett would almost definitely play a few games in the VFL this year. So he isn't fully retired. So I thought, perhaps Sydney could lure the younger Ablett over. In Sydney, he will hardly be a celebrity. Comparisons to his father will still exist, but they will be far less common, and that would undoubtedly appeal to Ablett.

What does RWO think? I reckon it should be at the very least considered. Given that we don't really have any young emerging key forwards at the moment, who have played a few games and shown what they can do (and I'm not counting Grundy, because, well, I don't think he's very good), I reckon getting a good, young key forward should be made a priority.

Of course, there is doubt over whether Nathan Ablett IS good, and it's not without reason. He showed flashes of brilliance in his games at Geelong, but I reckon his name had something to do with his selection as well. But, what can you expect from a guy who wasn't enjoying his footy, and probably subconsciously didn't want to do well because he didn't want comparisons to his father? Worth a shot, if you ask me.

I reckon he is a lemon. Of course Id consider him however but I dont think he's any good. Struggled for large parts of last year to kick goals in a very dominant team every week. Not that he couldnt come on and be a very good player, but I just dont see it Im afriad. Good in name, but not on the field imo.

I worry the same thing, but you have to consider the fact that he wasn't enjoying his footy. And if you're not enjoying your footy, you're not going to play well. He did show in patches the talent he had, so if we could get him cheap, he might be a punt worth taking.

Thats true as well but I just never have seen him show enough to convince me that he is any good. But enjoyment factor has to be a big part of it, and well he couldnt be more useless then some of our other forwards we have had over the years.

Nah don't want him really. He might end up playing for 1 year and throwing in the towel again.

I'd prefer we have someone who is enthusiastic about their footy.

good player in a good side. Not so sure if he would have much impact in a bottom 6 side. Go for players who have are likely impact at all ladder positions and then we have a chance to be a a good side. Hope that makes sense

There's confidence in the future of the Swans.

I'll be surprised if Ablett chooses to return to footy. I'd be even more surprised if he does it anywhere other than Geelong. While his profile is always going to be the highest at Geelong, I suspect some of what he did find fun was playing with his brother.

strange I had the same thought! (you watched the Gary jnr interview)

It would be remiss of Swans if they did not ask!

3 goals in a GF or was it 4?

Away from the local "zoo" mentality & expectation. Could be perrrfect!
IF he realises what enormous benefits such a career can provide!

yeh 3 goals in a grand final but just about everyone in the Geelong team kicked 3 goals in that flogging!

Nope, I didn't actually. I didn't know there was one. I was watching Before The Bounce on Fox, and Billy Brownless was on, and he seemed to think Ablett would be playing some games in the VFL. Then, while watching the game, I just thought about it. If we could get him cheap (maybe a third round draft pick or something), then really, I reckon that would be worth the risk.

I don't think too many premiership full forwards go for third round draft picks in their early twenties!

That's because normally they still want to play footy the next year.
