Same old style of play?

Honestly, it's a terrible start to the season and the whole "the game plan is fine, we just don't have the players" is starting to wear thin.

Change the game plan to a style that suits the players you have then!

I have heard through the grapevine that several of the leadership group are unhappy we do not adopt a more attacking game plan.

Also heard that Jude Bolton apparently wanted out as well.

Interesting, as at this club if there is smoke there more often than not is fire as well.

seriously I am still wondering how schneider was traded over him...I like the guy but ugghh..very fustrating to watch re basic skills

Fellas, next Sunday we'll get to see a totally different type of game next Sunday against Port to the one we saw last night.

As shown by their Grand Final effort Port are reliant on a running attacking game-plan & appear to have Little Sign of any sort of Plan B. Hence they have a pretty ordinary record against defensive solid sides like us & the Camry Crobots.

One of the most attractive matches last season was out game against Port at the SCG. Here's hoping next week will be just as good.

Maybe that's true . Maybe it's because he's playing more "inside" and gets more of the ball ?

Can't agree with you there Robbo. Being at the ground you often see it in a different light. McVeigh played really well. I would say he was almost back to his best. It will be interesting to see if he can keep it up though.

Every time we went direct we actually looked something like dangerous.
Then the disposal one kick from CHF let us down.
More often than not we were content to work the ball forward by a series of sideways kicks, thus allowing St. Kentucky Fried Chicken time to flood. (oh sorry i meant "get numbers back")

At the risk of sounding like Sam Newman, just get the bloody thing in there and give the forwards a chance. If you start getting stung on the rebound too often, fair enough, but nothing ventured....

I noticed a distinct difference in the stoppage play which is why I think McVeigh had a good night . In the warmup I was amazed at the attacking drill they were using . They tried it in the game and it didn't always come off due to human error and the opposition trying their own etc.. etc.. but there was a distmct difference. Presume this is the influence of the new guy.

Yeah, maybe I've been a little harsh on Mattner.

I'm not quite sure why I am bothering (maybe to get a closer look at some of Jack's stuff) but I am half way through watching a replay of the game and to half-time Mattner's been more valuable than I gave him credit for watching the game live.

I think my comments came from a frustration at how poorly the team rebounded from 50 last night, and laid it at Mattner's feet, just because he's not Malceski. I was very happy that the Swans traded for Mattner and I think he will be good for us once he's had a chance to settle into the team.

I thought Mattner was restricterd by the role he was playing on the night, I thought he was playing a very close defensive role? and did it pretty well.

McVeigh played really well. I would say he was almost back to his best.

My concern is his best isn't that great. I struggle to think of a game where he really took it by the scruff of the neck and dominated either around the stoppages or as a crumber.
I agree he was one of the better performers on Sat night but I'm yet to see anything to get excited about.
I think Kirk was ok on Sat too. Kennelly got a lot of uncontested possession, nothing new there, but when he has the ball in his hands you know something is going to happen - very like Davo.
Oh the sadness at not seeing he and Malceski together. I hope the Eski gets back because they would be a sight to behold.
Our style of play relies on pinpoint kicking to a leading target - we missed the pin and the point and our movement into the fwd line was stagnated by ultra defensive play by StK. I'd like to see Hall, Davis, ROK and Ablett start to take some shots between 40 and 50 with Jolly/Goodes pushing forward to the goal square with Moore/Buchanan at to crumb. A couple of times there was no Jolly pushing fwd and I think we could have created a reasonable contest to at least provide an opportunity to crumb. Jolly was probably knackered but too many easy marks on the defensive line to King (and I think one to Gardinder also).

Having watched a lot of games and viewed a lot of posts i have a lot of respect for Liz's views. However I think Mattner is being unfairly maligned here. Mattner was playing very deep, deeper than Malceski plays and was on Milne for large parts of the second half.

He appears to me to be a better defender - stronger at the spoil and tackle, a worse kicker - but still trusted to kick-in regularly - and he is defintely quick. There were a couple of times where he ran off Milne and closed down the space quickly - I recall watching Crouch who was very quick get repeatedly led to the ball by Milne in the past.

I think Mattner is going to go OK. He won't have Malceski's ability to hit a leading forward but he can move the ball quickly.

I thought Mattner did a great job on Milne. I have to agree with your comments. That was how it appeared at the ground. As for watching the replay I couldn't tell you as I am still having problems with AFL.com.au and bigpond even after numerous emails and 3 hours on the phone.

I dunno - tell me to pull my head in for harping on the point - but geez I wish that we could play like Geelong do - fast attacking footy - I was yelling at the teve everytime we went for the chip sideways pass and the odd go backwards to go forwards crap - its becoming tiresome, boring to watch and the opposition are a wake up too it.
