Footy For Melbourne Based Swans Supporters

If you would like to cheer on the Red and White in Melbourne while the Sydney Swans are at home or interstate then come along and check out the South Melbourne Districts Amateur Football Club. We play in the D1 section of the VAFA every Saturday afternoon (wearing the traditional South strip) and already boast a large patronage of Sydney supporters through our historical links with South Melbourne. Home games are played at the Lyndsay Hassett oval in Albert Park with away games spread from Mt Eliza to Fitzroy and out to Park Orchards.
There is no charge to home and away games and the VAFA promote football in a family environment.
Please visit our website for more info at http://www.smdsc.com.au/football-seniors/

or I'll try to answer any questions here or as private messages.
    ONWARDS TO VICTORY!

I think I played junior football at South Melbourne disticts under 12 level or something like that. Too long ago, I can't remember excatly. I grew up in South Melbourne and my father played for the Southern Stars Football Club, I think it was.

I'll have to find out about the Southern Stars, Our junior club is up and about fielding teams in the Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League and producing quality young players. With 3 league B&F's last year I'm sure you'll hear one of our players called on AFL draft day soon!

Some info for you Grim, The Southern Stars played in a Sunday comp back in the day where park footy resembled what we know today as street fighting. The Stars were made up mostly of Warfies and hard men from the infamous painters and dockers and had a main rivalry against South Colts FC, who our President's father played for. Our current team manager Mick's father Sid McKillop played for the Stars, sorry but the exact years have been forgotten.

As for the South Melbourne Districts, tomorrow we have a practice game against Latrobe Uni at the Uni's main oval in Bundoora from 1pm, beer should start to flow around 4pm after 6 x 25 minute stanzas.

Interesting......my mum said he worked on the warfe. So that explains why he was in the team. Do you have an email where I can contact you personally, I have a photo to show you of the 1951 Premiership team of the Southern Stars you might be interested in mate. My dad might have known Sid McKillop. My mum said the name sounds familiar.

The 1951 Southern Stars premiership team was:

                E White
                M Watson
                G Kohlman
                J Metherell
J Francis (My old man )
                B Metherell
                M Williamson
                S Yorston
                R Clarke
                J Watson
                J Hazelwood
                C Williamson
                J Douglas
                K Hunter
                A Prest
                A Meighell
                B Burns
                H Hookey
                L Hazelwood
                E Hughes
                G McCarthy
                W Somerton
                J Smith

My dad said, a couple of them went on to play for the Swans in the VFL, but I cannot tell you which ones. I know it's not J Francis or W Somerton, I know those two personally. lol

If anybody knows which players played for South Melbourne in the VFL, let me know, very interested in history myself.

I'll check our honour boards for any of those names, many blokes back then played on Saturday and Sunday, especially if a club was paying a few shillings. I could be wrong but I'm sure I've heard Swans legend Peter Bedford did this.

I wouldn't be surprised if my old man knew Peter Bedford.
