Day and Night, Night and Day

In the context of the time of day (or night) when a game is played, I have noticed that the Swans early form is completely consistent with their 2007 form.

Last year the Swans played 10 games during the day, and lost just one: a close loss against the eventual Premiers Geelong, at Kardina Park, and in wet and damp conditions. By contrast, their night record stood at just three wins out of 13. The three wins were all at home against Melbourne, Richmond, and St Kilda; none of whom were top 8 finalists.

So far this year the Swans have lost their first and only game at night (against St Kilda); and won their first and only game in the day time (against Port Adelaide). Is this a coincidence?

I should mention that this season Sydney play 11 games at night and 11 games in the day. Fortunately, 4 of the 11 night games are between Rounds 18 to 22, a period of the season when the Swans in recent years have been at the strongest.

or is it they were at their strongest during this period last season because we played comparatively few night games? Determining cause and effect is seldom straight forward.

I wonder if one of the problems with night matches is the same issue we have with wet weather matches - when the ball gets slippery our overuse of it brings us undone.

Except some of our night games are indoors at the Telstra Dome.

This topic has been a bugbear of mine for a while but I'm not convinced by that explanation. I'm not sure if there are any stats that could provide any insights, but my eyes tell me that the Swans' intensity seems to be much lower in night games than in day games. In particular, it seems to take them a lot longer to get up and going in night games, though they often play well later in the match.

The ground still more seems slippery. Maybe that's a perception because we fall over too much as I'm not sure if it makes sense.

                Strange though.

Maybe with all their meditation and what not, they are too zoned out by night time as it is their zoning out time during the week.
