The atmosphere was pathetic. Full of half-interested tourists. At the SCG there would've been a huge celebration at kicking the arse of WC by 10 goals. We left at 3/4 time for a sprint home so we could see the delayed last quarter on TV with a decent glass of red, the beer there is more appalling than the SCG, and have a quiet celebration (and to watch the punch up).

Totally agree the crowd and atmosphere was pathetic. I would have expected at least 50 thousand. Any suggestions on the reason???

Do Judd and Cousins have that much pull?

For some reason, the club is only selling 3-match passes for games at Homebush this year - the matches against Essendon, Collingwood and Geelong. That might explain why the crowd was down. Also, some of last year's 60,000+ crowd was probably attracted to the prospect of a Grand Final re-match.

Everyone was stunned by what Hall did to Staker. The atmosphere never recovered after that. And West Coast were simply pathetic, so there was no sense that this was a genuine contest.

In addition to that major track works might have had some affect as well. Especially now when the petrol prices are so high.

How is 44,235 a poor attendance? Sure, on a warm Saturday night against West Coast you might expect a few more but it's still a good crowd, in any code, in any city. Cityrail dont help with their bloody track work, which seems to happen on the Central Coast/Newcastle line 2/3 Homebush games. I was annoyed at having to drive down for it. To suggest that all that red and white was 'half interested tourists' is a nonsense. The atmosphere was a bit flat but I'd put that down to the one sidedness of the game.

Regardless of trackwork or any other mitigating circumstance you can name, the crowd was disappointing, size wise. Averaging 60K+ over the past few years, 62K to the corresponding early round game against the Illegals last year all points to 44K being a poor crowd.

Not sure how you can't see that.

I thought it was a disappointing crowd but the game didnt have the hype around it that it did last year. I expect a similar sort of sized crowd for Essendon but then 60k+ for Geelong and the Pies. If our season continues on the way it has so far though, we will get good crowds as the footy overall has been good to watch (Rd 1 excepted).

The atmosphere was very flat, but I think that was more to the fact that it went totally flat once Hall had his little brain snap. Up until then it was quite lively. Had that not happened it would been far better I think, but that just took it out of everyone in the ground I think. And the game wasnt like last year either- WCE were never in it and it was pretty one sided.

I'm with cruiser. >40k to a regular season footy game in Sydney, regardless of the opponent or the venue, and I'm stoked.

I think that was only for the initial few years due to changes to the original contract. The break even figure is much much lower these days.
