BLOODS RETURN HOME TO A WELCOME WIN

Round 4 saw the mighty Bloods drawn to play our strong rival from last season Aquinas at the Lindsay Hassett Oval. Having traveled to away venues for the past five weeks, the boys were very keen to get back to home turf and play at the familiar surrounds of Albert Park. Fielding a near full strength senior side, bolstered by the return from injury by Marty Costello and having former star junior player Ash Humphrey available, the boys were able to approach this match with great confidence, having dropped the first three matches.

After a slow start marked by a number of skill errors, particularly by hand, the Bloods boys started to find their targets and with that came the required momentum, especially on the scoreboard. The goal scoring was being shared by our key forwards and we enjoyed a small quarter time lead.

The second quarter to saw the introduction of Humphrey into the mid field where he was finding the footy often, and most importantly, delivering it to a mobile target which resulted in a goal. The back line was being well led by Paul Cheevers, Brendan Powell and Adam Ray and they continually forced the ball forward to our eager forwards all keen to get in on the action. The result, a 9.5 quarter to the opposition?s 3.2, giving the Bloods a 42 point lead at the long break. Jack Cronan featured strongly in this quarter with thre goals and new recruit Bryce Grieschiemer chimed in with two goals as well.

The work effort continued into the third quarter, despite a string of rotations through the interchange and the lead was stretched to 64 points at three quarter time. The emphasis by the coach in his three quarter time speech was on the need to maintain the level of team work, and for players to not get caught up on trying to do their own thing. Unfortunately injuries affected us and our concentration levels dipped in the final quarter allowing Aquinas to score a number of late goals which reduced the end margin, from their perspective to a respected 34 points.

The boys now can look forward to Rivalry Round, with our boys scheduled to meet Fitzroy Reds at the Brunswick Street Oval this coming Saturday. Fitzroy have played the past two seasons in C Grade and they have a number of highly experienced and quality senior players. It will be a great clash and a wonderful opportunity for our supporters to get along and support the boys.

No but he is a very talented cricketer in his own right. Had last summer off but you can usually see him slaying fast bowlers for Moorabbin West. This is his first year at South having seen the light and moved from Hampton in the SFL.

BLOODS LOSE FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A MONTH BY LESS THAN A GOAL

Playing in the Rivalry Round against Fitzroy Reds at the old Brunswick Street Oval for the Bill Stephen/ Peter Bedford Cup the mighty Bloods appeared to have a strong mortgage on the silverware at the 20 minute mark of the final quarter only to relinquish a comfortable 3 goal lead to go down by 1 point following a shot on goal after the siren by Fitzroy?s Full Forward, who had taken a strong mark on the lead.

In an afternoon where the Bloods boys would develop a lead, then see it reduced by the Fitzroy team?s tenacious approach to their footy, it is frustrating to report that our team can?t quite seem to put opposition teams away when it really counts.

Vice Captain, and recently announced member of the initial training squad for the VAFA?s C ? D4 State Team, Paul Cheevers played an absolute blinder starting in defence and moving forward late in the game. Cheevo?s reading of the play across half back steadied the team and repelled many opposition forward thrusts. When it came time to kick the long goal prior to three quarter time, again Cheevo stepped up to do the job. Other notable performers were Jack Cronan with three goals in a performance which will continue to keep the State selectors interested in his performances (Jack has been invited to join the State squad alongside Paul in that training squad as well).

There will be a great deal of soul searching this week by the coaching team in order to put plans in place to rectify these frustrating final quarter fade-outs. Instead of sitting 3 & 2 we now find ourselves placed 1 & 4 and fighting to stay clear of the dreaded relegation zone.

The Bloods return home to the Lindsay Hassett Oval and will meet Yarra Valley Old Boys, a club that South Melbourne are yet to encounter. A tough, tight contest is expected. Yarra have played in this grade since 2003 and they are battle hardened at this level. A close contest is expected. Train well this week boys!!

BLOODS BOYS KEEP HOME WINS RECORD INTACT

In very slippery and cold conditions the Bloods prevailed over the opposition, Yarra Valley Old Boys. Yarra, who have participated in this grade for the past 6 seasons were most keen to achieve their first victory for the season at our expense. After an even start, Yarra kicked 5.1 in the second quarter to our 3 points to enjoy what appeared to be a match winning lead of 6 goals. The Bloods boys re-grouped and the side was restructured with the aim of getting more numbers behind the ball and a more open forward line. The result was a 4.3 to 1.0 third quarter and the Bloods had reduced the margin to 15 points in Yarra's favour. A 39 minute final quarter, highlighted by a number of ball-ups caused by the desperation of both sides, and the Bloods scoring another 5.4 to Yarra's 1.1 saw the home side win by 12 points.

Sensational effort in what must have been the wettest conditions seen on a footy field for many seasons.

BLOODS SUFFER FIRST LOSS AT HOME IN THREE YEARS

In the Round 7 clash, played at Lindsay Hassett Oval, Albert Park against the undefeated North Old Boys/ St Pats College, the Bloods were defeated by 29 points in a highly entertaining match played in excellent conditions and in great spirit.
After an inaccurate start where a number of early shots on goals resulted in points and a sluggish second quarter the Bloods went into the long break facing a 45 point deficit. For the second week in a row the Bloods came out in the third quarter and dominated proceedings with some strong tackling and team play to outscore the opposition 7 goals to 4. Senior Coach Tim Killworth emphasised to the group at the three quarter time break to not look at the scoreboard. If they players kept their levels of endeavour the goals would keep coming and the result would take care of itself.
The result was another 5 goal quarter to the Bloods, however NOBSPC were able to kick a couple of late goals to finish the game with a 29 point victory.
A disappointing result for the Club as it was our first loss at home since May 14, 2005.
Better players were Paul Cheevers, Sebastian Mahoney Adam Ray and Tim Nall.

Sorry sportsfans, this is a little late.

BLOODS SENIORS WIN THEIR FIRST AWAY GAME

In a first for our Club, the Bloods traveled to Mentone Grammar Playing Fields in Keysborough last Saturday to meet Old Mentonians , who were strengthened by a couple of quality ?ins?, released from their VFL playing duties.

This game was approached on the basis that the Panthers would have been stung by their heavy loss the previous week against Fitzroy Reds and they were certain to be formidable opposition.

It didn't take long for us to find out that the above was correct. The opposition was on fire early and we did well to stay in touch at the first break, trailing by a 7 point margin.

Old Mentone came out hard early in the second quarter and kicked four unanswered goals to jump to a 31 point lead. Fortunately some of the more experienced Bloods players stepped up to regain the ascendancy from the home team and scored enough goals to reduce the margin back to 15 points at the long break.

For the third week in a row the Bloods enjoyed a big third quarter effort, this time scoring 6 goals 8 points to the opposition's 1 goal 2 points. The endeavour , the tackling and the run out of defence (all integral aspects of the Bloods ?A? game came to the fore. The only lowlight was the fact that so many shots on goal failed to find their way through the big sticks.

The final quarter was marked by the Panthers playing on at all costs approach to the match. They heeded their coach's call to get the ball into play as quickly as possible. To the credit of our players, we were able to withstand the tremendous pressure being applied by the opposition and was able to kick 5 goals in the quarter to Old Mentonians ' 4 goals.

A tremendous result for our club, as it enables us to stay in touch with those clubs sitting in or near the top 4, thereby allowing us to retain our focus on finishing the season as a top 4 candidate. Well done to those players who attended the Club's Dinner Dance at the Powerhouse Function Centre on the Saturday evening, it was a highly successful evening enjoyed by all attendees who were certainly in good spirits.

He was invited to train with the squad but declined due to work commitments. Jack Cronan was also invited, tore his hammy at the first session and hasn't played footy since. Could make a return against the Pirates at home this week.

BLOODS COME FROM BEHIND TO RECORD A GUTSY WIN AGAINST STRONG OPPOSITION.

The mighty Bloods seniors won their Round 9 clash against Peninsula Old Boys at home in an extremely entertaining match played beneath a cloudy sky. The fast finishing Bloods found themselves behind for the majority of the afternoon, however, through some desperate efforts through the mid field and with a backline that stepped up late in the game, after struggling early with the size and quality of the Pirates forward line. The match, played in good spirit and at a fast pace was an extremely close affair all afternoon. Peninsula was able to maintain a slender lead at all three changes, however in the final quarter the Bloods boys were able to capitalise on some costly missed shots on goal in the third quarter to outscore the the opposition 4.5 to 3.3 to take the lead for the first time that afternoon at the 25 minute mark of the quarter. Peninsula remained desperate and retained the lead again, however the Bloods would not lie down and they were able to manufacture one final goal before the siren to secure a 3 point win. This sees South Melbourne retain 6th spot on the ladder with 4 wins at the half way mark, importantly, enabling them to maintain their aspirations to play finals for the third year in a row.
We meet second placed Bulleen Templestowe at the Lindsay Hassett Oval this coming Saturday. The Bullants are one of the form sides in this competition this year and will be a formidible opponent, however our team is coming together well at the right time of the year and we are confident in our ability to go head to head with the boys from the East and give a great account of ourselves.
