It was the vision of Staker placing his arms around Hall before the punch that triggered my memories.
Once again I must stipulate that violence of that nature is intolerable.
But I wondered why Staker held him when the ball was way off. How many times had Hall told him to stop?
Then I began to wonder why we condone this type of cheating?
Fair enough if there is a marking contest and players become entangled in a grapple and eventually grab an instinctive hold of their opponent in a frantic effort..
But why do we laud a player who knowingly holds his opponent to get an upper hand in the contest?
We accept that holding is just part of the game. Well, it's not.
Holding appears a common thread leading to on-field violence.
The three players I dealt with were all serial offenders at holding when I went to lead.
