    AFL admits the interchange sucks

After last Sunday's debacle, new interchange rules are on the way - most likely including on-field penalties. Adrian Anderson says the current system is outmoded.

The interchange stewards and the emergency umpire knew a 19th player was on the field but could do nothing about it.

[Wondering, what does an interchange steward do?]

Interchange steward keeps record of the interchanges made.

I still believe than an on-field penalty is tough.

But bloody finally, the cronies realise that this stupid rule of having the score set to zero is out dated. It would be a farce if this happened now.

My Nth Mebourne supporting colleague and I came up with an idea - yes its stupid - but it just might work!!!

We figure that the interchange gate should be just that - gates on bollards,(the AFL could do a deal with bluescope steel or bunnings for wood and chicken wire) and the AFL Stewards, which we consider there should be 2, one for each club, on the boundary and they should actually earn their keep and monitor the comings and goings through the gates. We also came up with the idea that all players should be wired with those sat nav manbra things that some of the boys wear - and there would be a sensor that could detect if there are more than 36 players on the field of play. We thought the added feature of an electric shock for the offending player that runs on (normally the last person to run through the gate) but that could be considered as a form of torture.

Electronic sensors. Then anyway with the right equipment can monitor them.

I'm still interested to know how champion data had Jolly coming off the ground when he was still on the ground though.

        Who does there stats?

          Champion Data is overrated.

I almost guarantee it was like this... incompetence.

White goes on the ground, they mark the time he went onto the ground. They realise nobody came off, then Jolly comes off. They mark him against White as the interchange at the same time.

I am almost certain that is what happened.

They use the interchange sheets that the stewards maintain.

The way it is meant to work (according to the AFL rules) is that the player coming onto the ground (White) tells the interchange steward who he wants to replace (Jolly). The steward checks it is okay (not sure how it can't be - I think they make sure that player is on the field or something and the player coming on is allowed to - eg: stretcher, leaving the ground not through the interchange gate). He then gives approval and notes down the times and changes on his sheet. The players then have 3 min in which to execute the interchange before they have to request permission again.
