Is it Too Early to tank?

Today's effort was very reminescent of the pre-Bloods Swans (whatever happened to them)...poor decisions, bad skills... and given Bazza is still a month or so away from getting some structure into the forward line, should we forget 2008, and tank a la the Blues, to get some GOOD draft picks at the end of the year. It may be our last chance for a while if the Gold Coast Pineapples and the Western Sydney Housos join the comp in the next couple of years, given that they'll be offered very attractive recruiting concessions...

We're not going to tank. I think we'll finish thereabouts - similar to last year, perhaps one week better.

      Talk about an over reaction.

We have had a decent start, but one that has been hampered in no small way by losing Hall to suspension and a broken wrist.

The thing that is hurting the most however is the injury problems we currently have to our "most likely" younger players in Laidlaw, Schmidt, Merideth etc.

Unfortunately we had to play Smith in Geelong when he was clearly not ready and we turned to Matthews today and he was not up to it at all.

These days you need all 22 contributing and I am sure Roos and coaching staff would love to have a couple of the youngsters who deserve a game on form and maturity coming into the side right now. That's not the case but can change very quickly in the space of a couple of weeks.

We are still looking at somewhere between 4th to 8th and could very easily jag a preliminary final spot if everything goes our way.

What is the point of tanking other than high draft picks?

You can still find gem players in the lower order of the draft, and through the rookie system, if you draft really well.

            Hardly tanking material.

Played several young kids with great return.

Thank goodness for some sanity! Given we've played all those games minus Malceski, six without a second ruckman and half them without Hall, at the same time having kids make up a quarter of our side, I think that we're not badly placed. Usually we're worse off after 7 games, have had our full team in and invariably lost at least one game to a muppet team. And the easier games are still to come.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

Silly to discuss tanking. The main thing is that if this year happens to go not-so-well then our kids have at least gotten some experience playing in a reasonably good side before the old blokes call it a day. We're in that position now I think, far less painful than introducing a stack of youngsters at once.

If we are in a rebuilding phase, and this is as bad as it gets, I'm pretty happy with that. I'd hate to hit rock bottom the attempt the climb back up.

We also played far worse football at times in 2005 and 2006 than we did today.

It seems to me we ARE in a rebuilding phase...for the past three years we've virtually stuck to the same team, with occasionally giving a younger player a run, but this year a number of newbies or near newbies have had regular spots, with some oldies like Mathews spending their time in the 2s...
That's sort of rebuilding in my book...

yes, but I don't think that's anything to be proud of...
and we played some fantastic footy in 87...three matches in a row over 200 points...one against the bummers..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm coming round to the belief that the current Swans aren't as good as I hoped they'd be...
