Well Kell's oldest must be about 13 or 14 by now. Born I think near the 1996 GF?
Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting...hmm, wonder if he likes footy.

Probably would have been had the injury gods smiled on him. He had a bad run of luck before turning it around in 2005 thankfully.

Does anyone want to help out a recent convert and explain the father-son rule? And I already tried the RWO wiki...

Allows clubs to draft before the National Draft, sons of former players who have played (at this stage) more than 100 games.

It was only 50 a while back and I think coaching/playing records can now be taken into consideration as well when looking at the qualifying marks.

It was how Geelong were able to assemble a decent list recently with a number of their better players coming via father and son selections.

Tom Mitchell is a certainty to be drafted and to be asked by us to nominate under father and son rules.

With the advent of GC17 next year it helps our cause as he would be a potential top 10 and with the GC17 having most of the picks will likely be keen to nominate before the draft and come to Sydney.

If a player played 100 games for a club (different rules apply for interstate sides that don't have a Vic connection, but we do, so South Melbourne counts), their son(s), with consent of course, can be preselected by the club the father played for so they definitely come to that club. New rules, trying to lower the advantage the F/S rule gives, while still keeping the tradition alive, mean that other clubs can bid a pick for the player. If the father's club still want him, they have to use their closest pick after the highest opposition club bid. If they don't, the son is taken with the highest bid pick, and goes to that club.

Thanks for the info! 3 questions -
                      "bid a pick"?
And by "using their closest pick",do you mean they give that pick to the other team bidding, or they have to use that pick to pick the "son".
                      And closest above or below?

At this point my eyes glaze over and I just hope the club knows what its doing.

I propose a long term future plan. We marry up MickyO's little girl with Kirky's young fella, and both of Kirky's fiesty twins with Leo's boys, and wait and see what happens in about 30 years from now. If someone will hold a seyance in the future please invoke me and let me know what happens.

                              Haha, OK, an example:

Team A want to draft player S who is the son of a 100 gamer for that club. They nominate him for the F/S rule. He is a potential gun, and many clubs want him. Team A's picks are 6, 22, 38, etc.

Team B want this player, and have picks 9, 25, 41, etc. They think he is worth their first round pick, so they make a bid on S with pick 9. If Team A want S, they then have to use pick 22 on him, which is their next pick after B's pick 9. If they don't, the player then goes to Team B.

So in answer to your questions:

"Bid a pick" means make a bid for the player using a draft pick, meaning that if the F/S club doesn't want to match it, your club then gets the player (assuming it's the highest bid, if another club makes a higher one they'll get it).

"Using the closest pick" refers to the F/S club using their closest pick to the nominated pick to draft the player.

And it is the closest below (so a bid of pick 9 for Team B goes to pick 22 for Team A).

This is my understanding of it. Willing to stand corrected however.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!
