    Another snub from the snobs

SCG hits Swan's request for six - realfooty.com.au

We will always be nothing more than glorified guests at the SCG. Rodney Cavalier's statement "It is the Sydney Cricket Ground and the new stand was always going to be named after a cricketer" sums it up perfectly.

A new ground should be made for the Sydney Swans and we should move there, if the AFL had balls.

Don't have a problem with that, Cricket has been played there long before the Swans moved North, plus other areas have recieved recognition of the AFL played there.

I'll tear up my membership if it's not named the "Grant Lambert Stand".

One of the stands is named after a rugby league player called Clive Churchill. Obviously - or conveniently - Cavalier forgot that.

As is the Dally Messenger stand (I assume it is still there). League has been played there for 100 years or so though, much longer than AFL.

Yes, that's a fair enough point. Although I don't know if the league people ever made a financial commitment to upgrading the facilities there like the Swans have. Does anyone know who the Brewongle Stand is named after? I assume M.A. Noble was a cricketer.

Brewongle is an indigenous word for "place where the behind clappers sit down" or "meeting place" or something like that. Monty Noble was a cricketer (who was still living when those stands were built in the 50s I think).

The point about financial commitment to the ground is a good one, but I do not think we should be entitled to buy stand naming rights. Stands should be named after sporting champions that have a connection with the ground, rather than finacial contributors.

I've been waiting patiently for the Benny Mathews boundary line.

How about the Ryan O'Keefe 8th row and the Nick Davis bench.

I thought the bench was already named after Luffy!

Could be. He's got a medal, he should give up any association with the bench.

It really gets back to how strong we think our connection to the SCG is. I doubt we will ever be seen by the rulers of the SCG as having a legitimate claim to the place. I would not be surprised if we leave the venue for good at some point in the future.

Surely that would be more appropriate for the bench at Manuka?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
