    The AFL Website

The AFL site is exactly what you'd expect from a combination of AFL and Telstra.

It's totally apt that you can't post anything to the site; why would you want to involve the fans?

There is an article on CNet about the message on google search - "This site may harm your computer", when an aAFL site is found.

PS: CNet appear to be offline themselves ATM.

It's got worse ...I can only watch 3 seconds of footage before it buffers now. Tres annoying. I'm almost to the stage where I am going to complain and it takes a lot to get me to that stage.

Sydney and AFL crap web sites

How is it that I can read online newspapers and sports magazines from around the world the Age, the Herald Tribune, CNNSI, the New York times, The Guardian, the SMH! and so on
and I can read web sites that have nothing to do with Sydney or the Swans
and all load on a Mac all use flash and all also serve PC readers
              yet when you combine
telstra - run by a very rich yet incompetent Sol T
and the AFL - run by an equally ..you get the ......Demetriou...

              nothing

              what a joke..

The AFL website is trying to do too much. Every time I visit it in Firefox, it gives me a script warning about the script taking too long to run. They are trying to do too much on the client side and it's not working because it's way too sluggish. I mean, seriously, it interferes with the operation of my frigging COMPUTER; I click somewhere else and the computer does not respond to the mouse. It is one of the worst websites I have ever seen.

Surely, they need to get a clue.

They should cut out at least 90% of the Javascript. Then it will be lighter. So what if it must interrogate the website to retrieve data when the user clicks on something. Um, hello? Most websites do that? Better to take five seconds retrieving a page than locking up my computer for thirty seconds while it loads all this client-side crap that I am not going to use in the session.

The AFL website is a prime example of why programmers should not write code when they are drunk or on hallucinogenic drugs.

During the Easter holidays I decided to do something about not being able to get the replays to watch as they were the only reason I decided on Bigpond. It took me 5 days ,16 emails,5 hours on hold and 6 different technicians who kept giving me conflicting advice...turn this off, turn it on,turn off your virus protection...blah blah blah. Nothing worked until this week when I had not touched it for 6 days and now I can watch replays without it buffering for 10 minutes and then it goes to the goal of the round or hollywood round up. It is as if it has a life of its own.

The AFL site must be the worst web site ever produced.....

A lot of content nut none of it very good. Using flash about 8 times on one page is just ridiculous. Unless you are with Telstra on a broadband package of at least 512kb and living in the CBD of a capital city, you're never going to have a good experience on that site.

The design is cluttered and confusing only worsening the site.

If you want to see how good an AFL website can be go to essendonfc.com.au Unsurprisngly, The bummers website is still run by the club and is the most popular AFL website on the net. Why??? Because they control the content and make it work. Every other club sold off their rights to the AFL a few years back and now look what you get. Generic @@@@ templates that are riddled with bugs and broken links. But who cares??? Where else you going to go??? Well that seems to be the opinion of the AFL anyway....

I think you'll find the contract the AFL established with Telstra stipulated to some degree that each club had to have a relatively generic official homepage of sorts. Essendon had a second home page because they were under contract with 3mobile (or orange or whatever it was then) and part of that contract also had a website included, and they ran with that as the main page way back when.

But yes, the AFL website does suck the big one. I avoid it like the plague.

Just tried to watch last night's game. The Army advertisements worked fine but could only get the sound..no vision....may as well stick to the radio.
