The Michael O?Loughlin Stand (merged new SCG Stand)

The SCG is to announce today that the new Grandstand will be called the "Victor Trumpet Stand". Together with the O'Reilly, Noble and Bradman Stands, this means that the ground will have four grandstands named after cricketers. Fair enough in the context of what is officially a cricket ground.

That said, the stadium also has two stands named after rugby league players, namely the Churchill and Messenger Stands. These days the SCG hardly ever hosts Rugby League, perhaps once a year.

With over a quarter of a century of constant support by the Swans, isn't it time for a stand to be named after a Swan. If you check the SCG website, under the category of "Magic Moments", (perhaps ironically in light of this particular Thread), 8 of the last 22 events dating from 1982 have represented Swans occasions.

My suggestion is that in recognition of the Swans' near three decade contribution, there should be recognition of Michael O'Loughlin, by replacing his name with the existing Brewongle Stand when he retires. The Brewongle stand has an aboriginal connection, so the indigenous association will remain. Further, Magic will have played the most games ever for the club, (maybe even the first to reach 300), and the most ever finals for the club. If he plays 300 games he would be the first indigenous Australian to play 300 AFL/VFL games for the same club.

I suppose the counter argument is that as Magic is a South Australian, if an AFL player is to be recognised, he should be a NSW player such as Paul Kelly. I say to that; Kell's recognition can be laid at the proposed statute to be places outside the ground. One of the reasons why Michael O'Loughlin is the appropriate person for a Stand to be named reflects is indigenous background and the fact that this proposal means replacing the named Brewongle Stand

    I like it.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I wouldn't be too quick to suggest this. After another few years, Adam Goodes will be the club record holder, winner of multiple brownlows and upteen b&f winner for the swans!

He's in the cheersquad, which sit at the same end. There will be a "Julian Drum" bar and the "GoSwannies14 Tasmbourine lounge" as well.

Fair enough, except that Adam Goodes is at an age where it will be several years before he retires.

                Trombone, not Tasmbourine.

Great idea Top40. I think the fact that he is SA should not be taken into account. He has been a loyal servant of the Sydney based club, a favourite sun, and a champion player.

My apologies to the great opening batsman of the early 20th Century. I meant of course, "Trumper".

                    Excellent idea.
It would be nice if the knobs from the SCG trust thought like this but I'm afraid that it is just a dream........

Isn't there a "Paul Kelly Run" or something like that?
Captain, I am detecting large quantities of win in this sector

                        Nah, tambourine much more fitting.

                        Won't happen.

They had the chance to change the name of the Brewongle Stand when they rebuilt it in the early 80's. I sat in that stand with the roof pulled off, ready for demolition, watching and cheering as Parramatta won their first premiership in '81 (then the Swannies hit town, woohoo).

The name obviously means more to the SCG than just some random, token indigenous name or they would have taken the opportunity then to change the name.

                              New SCG stand named after....

                              Victor Trumper.

New SCG stand named after Victor Trumper - Breaking News - Sport - Breaking News

Named after a cricketter, but the magnanimous SCG have managed to drag in a minor connection to the swans. God bless 'em.

"He was good enough at Australian football that he could well have played for the Swans if that possibility had existed"
