On Sunday 1 June 2008 the Sydney Swans defeated the Richmond Tigers. This result saw the Sydney Swans/South Melbourne record their 1000th win in our 112 year-history of the AFL/VFL. The Sydney Swans now join 5 other AFL Foundation Clubs on this milestone.

To celebrate this milestone the Sydney Swans have released an exclusive limited edition t-shirts. The front of the t-shirt features 1000th win Sydney Swans design. While the back features South Melbourne's first victory against Carlton in 1897 and the Sydney Swans 1000th victory against Richmond in 2008.

This t-shirt can only be purchased directly from the Club.

All a load of AFL-centric codswallop if you ask me. Did South Melbourne start in 1897? Did South Melbourne have a massive change of playing personnel, overthrow of previous administration etc, from 1896 to 1897, so that it might as well have been a new club?

Nope. All that happened is that Sth Melbourne, a long-established club, along with 7 other established clubs, broke away from the existing competition the VFA and started their own league. Those who made that decision would have said 'perish the thought' to the idea that matches won and the club's proud record of premierships through to that point, would be regarded somehow a lesser part of the club's history by future generations.

Sth Melbourne/Sydney might have won 4 "VFL/AFL" premierships and 1003 or so "VFL/AFL" matches, which I'm sure is very important to Demetriouuuuu and his peons. But for a Swans fan, the fact that we've won 9 premierships (and one thousand and a few hundred matches) should be far more important.
