Interesting that the Swans website thinks the Coney deal is done.

Exactly my question, what the hell is a starlet? Is it is female star? Is it a little star? Is it a type of bird....oh that's a starling?

Seriously, I have watched a fair bit of Gaelic football on Setanta & can see lots and lots of their footballers being able to at least cut the mustard in the AFL. Ok in their game you can't mark & don't tackle, but I was surprised to see some bigger framed players running around who I think would make great defenders in footy.

Give em a Sherrin & see how well they kick the thing. The games are really very similar in so many ways. Centre half backs, etc etc

To be honest as somebody who follows AFL and & futbol I really enjoy the constant flow of Gaelic football games. No chipping in defence, no knocking it out of bounds to waste time, no stopping after taking a mark and then waiting an age to take your kick, only to chip it backwards to a guy who does the same.

The term "starlet" is quite often used in soccer to describe a particularly promising young star.

                        Kyle Coney Staying In Ireland

                        Taken from eircom.net.

Coney decides to stay at home

                        on 05/01/2009 18:51:51

Tyrone youngster Kyle Coney will not be returning to Australia after Christmas holidays spent at home and is instead focused on featuring for local side Ardboe and, hopefully, the All-Ireland champions.

The 18-year-old footballer signed a two-year rookie contract with Sydney Swans but after five-and-a-half weeks with the club he has decided to remain at home.

"I'm staying in Ireland for the time being," Coney said today. "I was scheduled to go back on 2 January but the time came to make a decision and I decided not to go back.

"I weighed up my options when I was in Australia. Now I want to keep my options open and I want to be playing football for Ardboe and Tyrone.

"It was a very, very big decision. It took a lot of thinking but in my opinion, I've made the right decision," he told BBC Sport.

"About a week after I came home (for Christmas), I said to my family that this is where I want to be playing football."

Coney won the All-Ireland minors title with Tyrone and was urged to stay by Red Hand star Se?n Cavanagh, but like a number of young GAA talents he was tempted by a trip Down Under.

He insists, however, the decision to stay at home was one he made on his own.

"They treated me really well but when I came home, I know this was the place I wanted to be," said Coney. "The plan is to be a part of Ardboe plans this year and hopefully some part of Tyrone's plans too.

"This was my decision. There was no pressure at all (from anybody)."

As an international rookie does he count against the total list number? I'm sure the first doesn't, but wouldn't we have had 3 going into next year so do they start to count after X number(or is 3 the max? I'm sure Carlton had 3 at one stage, or did they move Setanta onto the main list before his brother came over?)?

Just curious if this impacts on the number of NSW kids (for example) we could have rookied, if it doesn't really matter (short of impacting our commitment to some other international rookie) then I'm not overly concerned and best of luck for the kid in the future; better to find out now than to invest a couple of years in him, have him ready to go then have him say "actually, I'm going home".
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Not really, Ireland's slightly longer by foot (remembering he's on a rookie contract!) than Melbourne

We only picked up three new rookies this year and he was one of them. He has taken the place of any number of rookies that we could have picked up in the preseason draft or someone like bruce or faulks who actually were committed to a football career.

The mummys boy could have made this sort of decision before the club committed to him at the draft.

In that regard can the swans add another rookie now if he does decide to forgo his AFL career?
