I really don't care about the final score, just play some really decisive instinctive football down the guts boys, the more you go around in those ever decreasing circles dissapearing into the hands of someone not wearing red and white ... rebound .. GOAL, the more my membership for 09 in these testing economic times is under the pump.
I have to agree with Parko tonite, Brisbane are re-building quicker than Sydney, and are looking at a very ordinary few years if the new kids are not given more games.
The Pies run and spread confuses the fuzzy headed Swans, the Pies really enjoy this.
C,mon boys get with it.... go fast down the guts...

For us to beat the Pies tomorrow night we have to come up with a different game plan that what we normally do against them. I fear we are one trick ponies in terms of our tactics; willy nilly playing on in our defensive 50 which leads to players either being caught with the pill in a dangerous part of the ground or sending a kick or handpass anywhere, often to an opponent.

Malthouse has worked out the way to beat us is to flood the defensive 50 and to attack defenders like LRT & Bevan who rarely kick it when coming out of defence or Leo Barry & Marty Mattner who try and crash through tackles to run out of defence. But stopping our quick handball option we seriously have no other way of successfully getting it out of defence.

Furthermore when teams flood against us they can kick it out into an open forward giving nibble players like Thomas room to run into. Our way of dealing with it is to try and send short chip passes into the D50 which given the amount of defenders that are already there is nigh impossible. Otherwise we just we just hoof it high which is just hopeless. If we kick it high from outside 50 to beat the flood, then fine. But just hoofing it high to an overwhelmed & often frustrated Barry Hall gets us nowhere.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can change our gameplan so this doesn't happen, again? I have to say that until I see a difference in gameplan, I can see the result going the same way as it always done. The Pies strangling us to death then us only kicking goals when the game is all over in the last quarter.

              I think you mean nimble.

Your analysis is spot on. As for a new game plan, that's up to Mr. Roos, isn't it? At least his recent media statements seem to acknowledge our old game plan doesn't work against Collingwood. Interesting to see if his new whizbang game plan - whatever it is - holds up tonight under pressure, but somehow I doubt it.

Straight up the guts. O the simplicities of a less complex age. The straight up the guts game plan was destroyed by the great Len Smith circa 1960. Retro footy indeed.

Thwe Malthouse plan is to apply tackling pressure to our running defenders and zone defense the resultant kick out. The answer is not to not to KICK IT LONG or to GO UP THE GUTS but a speedier midfield and half forward line that is able to run quicky into space and take the clearance (either by foot or hand). The problem that Malthouse exposed was our lack of pace in the midfield and half forward line. That has been rectified with the inclusion of Vez and Jack. Because the breakdown is occurring at our run out of defense doesn't mean the solution is to be found in completely changing our running attack from defense. The solution is quicker movement further up the ground to allow the defenders to release the ball quicker upfield. As for Bevo not kicking please don't start me. The kid quarterbacks FFS!

Quarterback is the position between fullback and the halfback line which is the critical zone from which the second reciever distributes the ball. Not be confused with that wretched yank game position. And Bevo plays that role very well. He is one of our main first recievers from the kick out. Is the copncept too difficult for you?

The "quarterback" is the position in "that wretched yank game". The "quarterback" does not exist in AFL. If a position is referred to as a pseudo-quarterback then it would be obviously parallel that of a real quarterback, which would be to set plays and strategy. Receiving the first pass from a kick-out has nothing to do with being a quarterback. Most teams allow that first kick in, especially when it's a short kick to the pocket.

The first receiver from the kick out usually determines:
                            the direction of the attack
                            long or short
                            hold or run

All fairly important options i would have thought.
